Miami Dolphins Add Some Chop At No. 21

The Miami Dolphins picked Chop Robinson in the first round of the NFL Draft.

With many of the players that the Miami Dolphins were predicted to take in the 2024 NFL Draft already off the board, the team decided to add some chop with pick No. 21.

Demeioun Robinson, better known to teammates and opponents as “Chop,” was a standout defensive end for the Penn State Nittany Lions the past two seasons. In a three-year college career with the Maryland Terrapins and Penn State, Robinson accumulated 11.5 sacks and 20 tackles for loss in 35 total games. In addition to playing end, he also has played linebacker.

Robinson, who was given the name “Pork Chop” by his mother — who found him to be a pudgy child — later had the “Pork” dropped from his nickname after losing the baby fat.

Robinson brings his “Chop” maneuver to Miami Dolphins

Robinson, who used his favorite “Chop” maneuver to force two fumbles last season and three in his collegiate career, brings tremendous speed and a high motor to the end for the Miami Dolphins. His explosiveness off the line has drawn comparisons to Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys and Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns.

He is seen as an electric athlete that will need to work on his technique and power at the professional level, but learning is nothing new to the newest Miami Dolphins player. Robinson talked to Sports Illustrated of switching to defensive end at Penn State after playing linebacker at Maryland, saying:

“When I first got here, I felt like I wasn’t good at it, and I was getting frustrated But coach (Deion) Barnes told me that if you work on something every single day and you get 1 percent better, eventually you’ll get there. So that’s been my mindset for everything.”

He ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, which was the fastest ever for an edge player weighing 250 pounds or more (Robinson weighed in at 254 lbs.). In addition, he had a vertical jump of 34.5 feet, a broad jump at 10-feet-8, and a 20-yard shuttle time of 4.25 seconds.

One unnamed NFC scout told NFL.com about Robinson:

“I get the comparison to Micah Parsons, but I think Parsons was a little more polished as a football player when he came out. Chop is still a little green.”

According to Pro Football Focus, Robinson had the sixth-highest pass-rush grade among players with over 100 pass-rush snaps. He was one of the leaders on a defense that ranked first in the nation in total defense and third in both rushing defense and scoring defense.

Next Up for Miami Dolphins in 2024 NFL Draft

After finishing 11-4 for the team’s fourth plus-.500 season in a row, the Miami Dolphins were smacked in a sub-zero AFC Wild Card Game at the Kansas City Chiefs to end last season. With the Buffalo Bills, who won the AFC East last season on a tiebreaker, now seemingly in a bit of disarray, the future is now for the Miami Dolphins.

The team doesn’t have many picks to build from in this year’s draft. After one second round pick (No. 55), the Miami Dolphins don’t have another selection until the fifth round (No. 158). The team has two sixth-round picks (Nos. 184 and 198), as well as a final seventh rounder at No. 241.
