Lionel Messi is arguably the GOAT of football — although Cristiano Ronaldo fans will disagree. Whether you believe he is the best of all time, or he is just one of the most entertaining players to ever watch dribble a football, we can all agree that we want to see him and Argentina do well in Copa America.
Currently, Argentina is playing in a nail-biting Copa America tournament that sees Central and South American teams face off against one another to try and make it to the final game of the CONMEBOL Copa America international game that will be televised around the world.
With the help of Messi, Argentina just reached a milestone and record that wouldn’t have been possible without the talented, one-of-a-kind Argentinian maestro.
Messi and Argentina Break Records
Messi is more than happy to be still in the Copa America tournament with his domestic team, stating that he wants to make it to the final and enjoy the ride.
“Let’s enjoy what we are experiencing as a national team, as a group. It is not easy to be in a final again, to compete again to be champions. “I’m living it as I have been living everything lately: enjoying it very much and being aware, as it happens to Fideo (Di Maria) and Ota (Otamendi), that these are the last battles.”
After winning the semi-finals yesterday, Argentina and Messi have earned a joint record of 15 Copa titles and reached the final game six times in the tournament’s history.
But, it didn’t come easy for Messi and his side. Argentina made hard work of progressing to the final game, as Canada came out swinging and pushed them on the defense in the opening first half. After Getting into the game and settling into their possession-based football, Argentina took the lead in the 22nd minute with a calm and composed finish.
The 51st-minute goal saw him earn the all-time scoring record for Argentina and earn second place on the scoring charts for international goals, second only to his ‘rival’, Portuguese phenomenon Ronaldo who has 130 goals to his name.
At the very beginning of the second half, the crowd erupted when Messi, the man himself, scored in the 51st minute to give his country a goal that would help relax them even more in the game. Although Messi has struggled with muscular injuries so far this tournament, he appeared fit, fast, and energetic during the semifinal game with his team.
Argentina Looking Forward
Now, thanks to Messi’s record-breaking goal and Argentina’s record-breaking time in the final match of Copa America, they can bring home some hardware to their country. The next match of Copa America is tomorrow, featuring Uruguay vs Colombia to see who will progress to the final to face off against Messi and his squad. Both teams have displayed quality till now and it promises to be an exciting encounter.
