Lionel Messi is undoubtedly one of the ‘GOATs’ of football, with many debating between him and Cristiano Ronaldo as the best of all time. Even if you think Ronaldo edges out the Argentine as the best who ever played, there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Messi is one of the best dribblers and creative players to ever take the pitch in a game of soccer.
So, that is why Messi’s opinion is held in such high regard in the footballing world. Messi was recently asked who he thought the best team in the world was currently -and his answer might surprise you, considering his loyalty to Barcelona in the past.
Messi Surprise Answer With ‘Best in the World’
Messi played at Barcelona FC in La Liga in the Spanish domestic league for many years, becoming one of the top players in the club at a young age. Even in his first appearances for senior football as a teenager, everybody could see that he was special and he would become one of the top scorers in the league – and the world.
So, when he was asked who the best team in the world currently is, his answer surprised the interview and many who read the response.
‘Best team in the world? Real Madrid, is the current European champion. If we talk about results, Real Madrid is the best. If we are talking performance-wise, Manchester City, led by Pep, is the best.’
He didn’t mention Barcelona in either stipulation as one of the best in the world but did mention one of their close rivals in the same league, La Liga. This goes to show how much he thinks that Barca has fallen in recent years after the departure of key players like himself, Busquets, and Iniesta.
Now, Real Madrid are among the top in the world. They have consistently won the Champions League Final and won La Liga every year, with players like Benzema (now in Saudi Arabia) and Modric leading the way. With new signings like Kylian Mbappe, they are sure to get even better next year.
For Manchester City, Messi thinks that this English Premier League team led by Pep Guardiola is the best in the way they play. City has players like Haaland to score goals, DeBruyne to thread passes, Foden to take players on with his creative dribbling skills, and Ederson to stop shots.
Although some may think that Messi’s claims come as a surprise to the die-hard Barcelona player who once thought of the club as his second home, others do not. It makes sense the current CL champions would be one of the best in the world and the Premier League champions would be up there as well.

Looking Forward at Messi’s Career
so, what is Messi up to next? Will he continue to play in the MLS for David Beckham’s team, or will he go elsewhere?
Currently, he is only focused on helping his international team, Argentina, make it to the final game of the Copa America beginning this month on June 20th in Canada. His team will face difficult sides before they can progress to the final match to see if they will win their fourth-straight trophy of the tournament.
