The increasing competitive intensity in the final part of Formula 1 season is here. McLaren’s team faces heightened expectations to make important decisions that may alter their standing in the championship. As of the recent time, the head of the Mercedes team Toto Wolff drew attention to McLaren’s problem which speaks about internal conflicts observing the team’s performance.
McLaren was in a position to give a hard chase to Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for the championship and was going to have an internal strife situation during the Italian Grand Prix. Wolff’s statement has enlightened the needs of McLaren and perhaps, a change of strategy concerning team orders.
McLaren’s Race Performance
In the Italian GP qualification, McLaren solidified itself by taking the pole position when both their car drivers qualified in the front row. Lando Norris was the key driver for the team to have a lead among the teammates. He dropped down from first to third position on the first lap after a rather reckless move against Piastri, his teammate. Having built up the pressure going side by side on the Della Roggia chicane, Piastri overtook Norris. Norris also was defeated by another position by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc soon after that.
Norris came to the end of the race in third behind Piastri and Leclerc. Still, he was able to slash the 75-point gap to Max Verstappen for the drivers’ crown to only 62 with eight Grand Prix to go. It was, however, a below-par race for Verstappen, who finished only sixth.
Wolff’s Insights On Team Orders
Toto Wolff commented on the difficult position McLaren finds itself in. He emphasized that while McLaren, like Mercedes, wants the best driver to win, allowing drivers to race freely can sometimes harm team performance. Wolff noted that implementing team orders could be a double-edged sword, he mentioned that:
“The team is always on the losing end because if you freeze positions and start to have team orders, then you have maybe not what our racing soul wants to do, but the rational side needs to prevail. At the end, you don’t want to lose out on a championship by three or five points that you could have easily made. So walking that tightrope is so difficult and there is no universal truth of how to handle it.”
It is certain to understand that the accurate strategy will give a victory to the team. McLaren’s racing team boasts some of the best drivers, but managing team orders is the responsibility of the team’s authorities. If the issue that is faced by the team continues it may lead to severe difficulties for them. Wolff suggested that McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella may need to reassess their approach to team orders, he stated that
“I mean Andrea [Stella] and Zak [Brown], there is nobody that understands sport more than They do. Andrea has seen it all of that pan out in front of his eyes multiple times at Ferrari, Wolff added.”
McLaren’s responsible people are highly experienced people, who know how to handle the game. He has a racing soul that doesn’t want to impose strict rules but might need to reconsider how to handle such scenarios moving forward. This challenge shall be covered as soon as they can to win at this tough stage.

The title race may bring certain crucial choices for McLaren’s team starting with the orders of the team and internal issues. That is why with such serious insights and possible changes in the setup in the future, they will have to be extremely cautious in their actions to have the greatest impact on the championship.
