The Memphis Grizzlies played the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA Summer League on Thursday. Grizzlies 2024 1st-round pick C Zach Edey hasn’t played in the NBA Summer League yet. He played a preview game in the Salt Lake City Summer League against the Sacramento Kings on July 8th. In that game, the Purdue star scored 14 pts, 15 Rebs, and handed four blocks. He went out with a sore right ankle in that game. Well, Memphis Grizzlies fans got a chance to see the rookie center. But it wasn’t for long.
Edey started the game and produced six points, three rebounds, and one block. During the 2nd quarter, Edey landed wrong on his right ankle, and after nine minutes of play, he didn’t return the game. As of now, Edey is considered day-to-day, according to ESPN. Even with the high expectations of their rookie star and with him out again. Grizzlies still had a game to win. Center Trey Jemison replaced Edey in the game. Next man up, right?
Still Ballin’ Grabbing Wins
With C Zach Edey out, other players have been stepping up and showing out in the Summer League. One player doing well in the Summer League is Memphis 2023 2nd round pick F GG Jackson II. Jackson II’s last game against the Orlando Magic, he dropped 27 pts on 50% shooting from the field, was 3 for 9 from the 3-point line, and grabbed 13 rebounds. In Thursday’s game, the Memphis forward scored 17 pts, seven rebounds, six assists, and one steal. Besides the game against the Magic, Jackson II has scored 17 points in all the games of the Summer League.
Another player showing off their skills is Memphis G Scotty Pippen Jr. In the same game against the Orlando Magic, he attained 25 pts on 9-14 shooting from the hardwood, with 4 Rebs, and delivered nine dimes. In the game with the Pelicans, Pippen Jr chalked up 17 pts on 6-11 shooting from the field, grabbed six rebs, dropped 11 asst, and swiped three steals. The Bulls F Hall Of Fame son has been playing very well throughout the NBA Summer League. Even with the star rookie Zach Edey out there, there has been real promise for other players on the Memphis Grizzlies squad.
Talent Showing Promise
The Memphis Grizzlies are looking to make it back to contenders in the Western Conference in the NBA, with star G Ja Morant back from injury. The franchise is looking to put more talent around him to maximize their chances to make it deep into the Playoffs. Memphis has F Jaren Jackson Jr and F Desmond Bane, who did well last season in Morant’s absence. With only one game to show, a complete survey of Zach Edey’s game hasn’t been seen. GG Jackson II and Scotty Pippen Jr have shown to be good pieces to the team if the franchise decides to apply them to the roster.
Another player leaving their mark in the NBA Summer League is Grizzlies F Jake Laravia, 2022 1st-round Minnesota Timberwolves pick, who has been playing well. In Thursday’s game, he, too, had ankle soreness, which limited his playing time. Also missed the game against the Magic. In a game against the Dallas Mavericks on July 15th, Laravia scored 22 pts on 7-15 shooting, 4 Rebs, two assists, and six steals. DeJon Jarreau, forward for the Memphis Grizzlies, scored 15pts on 5-8 shooting from the field and was 2-3 from the arch. The Memphis Grizzlies are 4-0 in the Summer League. The next game for the Grizzlies will not be until July 21.
