The Netherlands international Memphis Depay has finalized a transfer to Corinthians, signing a contract that will keep him at the Brazilian club until December 2026. Memphis, who developed through PSV’s youth system, previously played for Manchester United, Lyon, and Barcelona. Memphis Depay began his professional career with PSV Eindhoven in 2011 and later played for Manchester United, Lyon, and Barcelona before moving to Atletico in 2023. He made his debut for the Netherlands national team in 2013, scoring 46 goals in 98 matches.
Memphis Depay To Leave Atletico Madrid
In January 2023, Memphis Depay moved to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona, with the club announcing that his contract would run for the remainder of the 2022-23 season and two additional seasons suggesting it would last until the following summer.
However, his contract required him to play at least 45 minutes in 50% of the matches he was available for, otherwise, the extension for the 2024-25 season would not be triggered.Memphis Depay made 40 appearances for Atletico after leaving Barcelona but only started 14 of them, thus not meeting the necessary criteria. During those games, the 30-year-old scored 13 goals and provided two assists.
His Dutch teammate, Steven Bergwijn, also completed a transfer this summer, moving from Ajax to Saudi Pro League club Al Ittihad. This move was criticized by national team coach Ronald Koeman, who left the 26-year-old out of the Netherlands’ squad for their Nations League matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Germany this month.
New Role At Corinthians
Memphis Depay is a highly versatile forward, equally skilled at creating goal-scoring opportunities as he is at finishing them. When making runs behind the defense, he effectively controls direct passes played through or over the opposition and shields the ball from his marker until his teammates arrive for support. He uses a technique similar to Eden Hazard, holding off opponents by using his left arm when the ball is on his right foot, or his right arm when playing off his left foot, while manipulating the ball with the sole of his foot.
His ability to change direction is another key strength, allowing him to turn defenders and escape pressure. Although he’s more dominant with his right foot, he can twist and turn effectively in either direction during one-on-one situations. In almost every scenario, he demonstrates excellent awareness, frequently scanning for options and delivering accurate passes in the final third.
He is equally adept at dropping deeper into space to escape pressure when trying to advance through a compact defensive block. From these positions, his passing range allows him to break defensive lines, especially when paired with quick teammates making curved runs across the defensive line.
