Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been picked up by Bangladesh’s selectors to the Twenty20 Indian squad for the three-match series against India that begins next week. Mehidy Hasan was an important all-rounder in the two lengthier forms but played his final 25 T20Is in July of last year, missing the final 24 matches for Bangladesh in that format. Shakib Al Hasan is the most notable omission. However, this was predicted when he declared on Thursday that he would be retiring from Test and Twenty20 international cricket.
The other player who was left out is Soumya Sarkar, who played in the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Mehidy Hasan, who now has 248 runs in 20 T20I innings at an average of 14.58 and a strike rate of 118.66, with a best score of 46, will have his work cut out for him in the new role. He has batted twice as the opening batsman and once at No. 5 and 6.
Mehidy Hasan’s New Role
Mehidy Hasan left-arm spinner Rakibul Hasan and opener Parvez Hossain Emon were called back. While praising Shakib and stating that Bangladesh would struggle to replace him, chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain expressed his optimism that Mehidy would be able to assume a more batting-centric role in Shakib’s absence. Mehidy Hasan, according to Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain, was chosen to bat higher in the order rather than having a designated bowling role.
“The great Shakib Al Hasan has already announced that he has played his last T20I for Bangladesh,” the Chief Selector said. “We don’t have anyone to replace his experience and performance but we feel that Mehidy Hasan Miraz is a good batter who can handle the middle order. Mehidy can play as a batter. We didn’t pick him in the previous [T20] World Cup as we usually feel that he has a strong role as an allrounder in Tests and ODIs,” Ashraf added. The left-hand opener Parvez, according to Ashraf, made an impression on the selectors at several off-season camps. He went on to say that Tanvir Islam, a left-arm spinner, was injured, thus Rakibul was chosen.
Bangladesh Squad vs India
Asharaf went on to say that Tanvir Islam, a left-arm spinner, was injured, thus Rakibul was chosen. “We have made changes in the opening, middle order, and spin attack while keeping the pace attack intact,” Gazi Ashraf Hossain stated. “We have brought in Parvez Hossain Emon in Soumya Sarkar’s place. We have observed him in the recent camps. He is part of our plans. Rakibul has taken Tanvir’s place, as the latter is recovering from a broken hand. Rakibul is useful with the new ball.”
Even though Mahmudullah had a mediocre performance in the T20 World Cup earlier this year, Ashraf stated that the selectors still thought the veteran might be useful in the T20I side. India will play Bangladesh in Twenty20 Internationals in Gwalior on October 6, New Delhi on October 9, and Hyderabad on October 12. The Bangladesh squad is made up of the following: Jaker Ali Anik, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shak Mahedi Hasan, Rishad Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Rakibul Hasan, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Parvez Hossain Emon, and Tawhid Hridoy. The captain is Najmul Hossain Shanto.
