Manchester United Sell Scott McTominay to Napoli

Manchester United have reportedly agreed to sell Scott McTominay to Napoli. With McTominay in the final year of his contract, there has been significant speculation about his departure this summer. United have also secured the signing of Paris Saint-Germain’s Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte after reaching an agreement with the French club.

Although United can extend his contract by another year, they are prepared to part ways with him before the transfer deadline on Friday. Fulham had shown interest in McTominay but shifted their focus to Sander Berge from Burnley after their bids were unsuccessful.

Napoli, who also expressed interest, had a 25 million euros (21.2 million pounds) bid rejected but has continued negotiations. According to The Athletic, Napoli has now agreed to purchase McTominay for 30 million euros (25.4 million pounds), with Manchester United also set to receive a percentage of any future transfer fee.

Benefits for Manchester United and Napoli

This sale would help Manchester United align with Premier League financial regulations, as it would be recorded as a profit. McTominay still needs to approve the transfer before it can be finalized.

Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, is in England working on this deal and others, including potential moves for Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku and Brighton’s Billy Gilmour. McTominay is on the verge of ending his 22-year association with Manchester United, where he has made 255 appearances and contributed 29 goals and eight assists.

He likely made his last appearance for Manchester United in their 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday, coming on as a substitute in the 79th minute. If the transfer goes through, McTominay will bolster Napoli’s midfield options, joining players like Stanislav Lobotka, Frank Anguissa, Gennaro Iaccarino, and Coli Saco.

Scott McTominay’s Role at Napoli

This marks the second consecutive year Manchester United has been open to selling the academy graduate. Earlier in August, United turned down a £20m offer from Fulham for the Scotland international. Last season, McTominay opted against joining West Ham, eventually making 32 Premier League appearances and scoring seven goals for United. He also started in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City.

Signing McTominay could prove to be very beneficial for Napoli. He possesses great on-ball qualities, he is not a bad defender too if the team needs him. He is a versatile player and could fit in any project under a good head coach. He possibly hopes to get high game-time as a key player in the Napoli squad.

So far this season, McTominay has appeared as a substitute in both Premier League matches. Manager Erik Ten Hag is still looking to strengthen his squad and values McTominay’s status as a homegrown player, which provides additional flexibility under the Premier League’s financial regulations.
