Mbappe Powers Madrid To Super Cup Title

Kylian Mbappe Scores for Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe stepped onto the pitch for the first time as a member of Real Madrid for the 49th edition of UEFA’s Super Cup final in Warsaw, Poland, and came away a winner. Madrid defeated Atalanta of Italy’s Serie A, 2-0 to secure their second consecutive, 6th overall, Super Cup title.

New Start, Slow Start

Madrid started at full strength for the first time this summer. That meant an attacking line of Vinicius Jr., Mbappe, and Jude Bellingham. This was the first time for all three to take the pitch together and it showed.

Though the first half was active with end-to-end movement from both sides, but saw no scoring however and just a few near chances. The first of those nearly granted a surprise lead to the underdog Atalanta side. The Europa League champion‘s captain, Marten de Roon, had his effort from just inside the box carom off defender Éder Militão and strike the upper corner of the Madrid woodwork.

Rodrygo of Brazil returned the favor in the first minute and added for the half. Striking the top of Juan Musso’s crossbar. But despite the firepower present particularly from Madrid, the half ended 0-0.

The story of the match was written in the second half. Vinicius Jr., a threat down the left side for the entire night, finally broke through. He reached the end line in the 59th minute and pulled the ball across the goal. It found its way perfectly to Beni Valverde. The Uruguay international put it easily away from barely three yards out.

Seven short minutes later Kylian Mbappe made his presence known. Vini once again created problems for the defense on the left side.  Jude Bellingham took over deep in the box and slipped a ball across to the opposite corner. The latest star in their galaxy crushed the ball into the back of the net for his first-ever goal as a Madrid man.

Madrid Focussed Through Distractions

Mbappe’s debut was not the only distraction for Madrid. The previous week had seen rumors of Saudi offers for Vinicius Jr. of epic proportions. Carlo Ancelotti, his coach, has called Vinicius the best in the world.

Comings and goings were the tone of the entire summer for Madrid. All of which made the Super Cup final even more tense than it might have otherwise. It marked the first competitive match without Toni Kroos, now retired. As well as the first match back from serious injury for keeper Thibault Courtois. The club’s performance under such conditions just demonstrates that they are the club to beat in any competition they are a part of. And, given the youth in the club now, that will be the case for a very long time to come.
