Matthijs de Ligt is one of the major targets for the Red Devils in the transfer market. They desperately need a new center back. The club is currently close to reaching an agreement with Bayern Munich for their preferred choice. Manchester United are very proud of securing a deal for the Dutch player, who has given the go-ahead for a transfer to Old Trafford.
The Netherlands international has agreed to a pay cut on his exuberant salary, and the arrangement is still intact between the respective clubs. De Ligt’s medical could be procrastinating due to his engagement at Euro 2024, where they are in the in the semi-finals stage facing their rivals England, but there is idealism from United’s end that a deal could be finalized soon.

The former Bundesliga player gains full trust and approval to join Manchester United, with the club also making another key bid to sign a second center-back this summer by making a new bid for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite. The Netherlands international, who played in the Euro 2024 win over Romania, is keen on reuniting with his old Ajax boss, Erik ten Hag, at Old Trafford. United is prepared to offer De Ligt, aged 24, a five-year contract if they come close to an agreement for a £42 million deal with Bayern Munich. Bayern needs the money to be able to buy Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen as a de Ligt replacement.
Matthijs De Ligt’s motivations for joining United
The manager made it known that the new signing had the potential to be the world’s best defender when he was a teenager at Ajax. Could a move to Manchester United be successful? This will help him reach that potential. At 19, De Ligt was the captain of ten Hag’s Ajax team and led them close to a Champions League Final. He had made history by being the youngest player to appear in a Europa League Final at 17 when he left the Dutch squad. Still in his teens, he had already played 100 senior matches. Ten Hag believes that the transfer of De Ligt will have a great impact on United’s defensive strategy.
Willing to take a pay cut to sign for Manchester United
Bayern Munich’s central defender, Matthijs de Ligt, is looking to transfer to another club this summer to attempt a new challenge. The Red Devils are the leading countenance in his move. De Ligt is willing to accept a pay cut to make the abrupt move. He currently earns about 15 million euros at Bayern Munich, while United is offering less than 12 million euros. However, despite this situation, he is eager to join his former Ajax boss at United. Bayern wants to sell him due to his injury situation. Contrary to the coach, Vincent Kompany prefers different qualities in the central defensive.
In a Yahoo Sports UK piece, he offered the following:
First of all that the club wants you is obviously a big thing, I think the board really showed me that they wanted me to become a player of Bayern Munich that also says a lot for me because it’s really important. I think the club suits me really well, I think it’s offensive football, hard training [and] high intensity, I think that’s something that I really search [for] in a club and that’s perfectly in my world.

The Red Devils want to add another additional center-back alongside De Ligt to offset the departure of Raphael Varane, which has left Lisandro Martinez, who has struggled with injuries, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and 19-year-old academy graduate Willy Kambwala as the only options available to manager Erik ten Hag. De Ligt, who has three years remaining on his contract, is on relatively high wages at Bayern, but United would be able to accommodate him within the pay structure at Old Trafford, and the 24-year-old could even take a pay cut.
