Matt McCarty won the inaugural Black Desert Championship in Ivins, Utah. He won his first PGA Tour event in only his third tournament after dominating the Korn Ferry Tour earlier this year. Will he be able to keep up this hot start?
Matt McCarty Keeps Winning In 2024
2024 has been a fantastic season for 26-year-old Matt McCarty. He earned status on the PGA Tour by winning three events this year on the Korn Ferry Tour. McCarty is the first player since 2005 to win three times on the Korn Ferry Tour and then win on the PGA Tour in the same season. Jason Gore was the last golfer to accomplish the feat nearly 20 years ago. “I knew if I played well this week after last week then I could maybe have a chance but to do it like this? I don’t know how you could expect this, to be honest,” he said.
McCarty Makes History On PGA Tour
The Black Desert Championship marked McCarty’s second PGA Tour event this season and his third overall. He played in the 2022 U.S. Open. Since 1970, only five players have won their first PGA Tour event in three tournaments or less. McCarty played golf collegiately at Santa Clara University after a successful high school career at Desert Mountain High in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Matt McCarty started off hot with a bogey-free 62 in the first round. Then took the lead with a third-round 64. He entered the final round with a two-shot lead. McCarty admitted to feeling nervous during the final round. The difference on Sunday was that he felt the pressure intensify throughout the round.
McCary Nearly Holes a 310-Yard Tee Shot
A birdie on the first hole should have calmed his nerves. He also birdied the seventh hole to shoot a two-under-par 34 on the front nine. A bogey on the 12th hole cut McCarty’s lead to just one shot. On the 14th hole, McCarthy hit the shot of his life. On the 310-yard par four, he smashed his three-wood to within three feet of the hole. Then he proceeded to calmly roll in the eagle putt to take a three-shot lead with only four holes to play. He also birdied 16 and 18 to cap off the biggest victory of his career.
McCarty Earns Spots In Marquee Events
With the victory comes the $1.35 million winner’s check. He also qualified for the big-money Sentry Championship in January. Plus invitations to both the Masters and the PGA Championship next year. McCarty had already qualified for the U.S. Open by leading the Korn Ferry Tour’s points list. Asked about how his first PGA Tour win would change his life, McCarty said “Financially for sure.”
Combined with his Korn Ferry Tour earnings of $700,000, McCarty has pocketed more than $2 million in prize money in 2024. If he continues to play well into 2025, McCarty’s $1.35 million winner’s check for the Black Desert Championship could amount to peanuts.
