Mason Greenwood is a name that nobody in England wants to hear. The young teenager was supposed to be the next big thing at Manchester United after he became well known during his younger playing days. But he squandered away a successful career due to bad decisions. He was caught on tape abusing his then-girlfriend and was charged with rape and sexual assault.
The downfall of Greenwood is not to be understated. But for some reason, United has kept him around during their business deals. He’s still under contract with United, even during his long break from football, so the club is looking to make money off of the washed-up player.
But it seems as though Ligue 1 in France doesn’t care much about the ramifications of taking such a controversial player into their league.
Mason Greenwood Heads to Marseille in Ligue 1
Mason Greenwood is headed to Ligue 1 to see if he can re-find some of the form that he had in his glory days at United. The accused sexual assailant tried to rejuvenate his footballing career after he took a long break during the trial, only to find that he needed to play in other countries besides England—no team in the Premier League or Championship wanted him, and rightfully so.
Now, Olympique Marseille has decided to sign the deviant to their team. Manchester United looks at this deal in a business sense—they’re entitled to 50% of the profits of a future sale of Mason Greenwood during contract negotiations with Marseille.
The 22-year-old heads to the French team after rumors swirled that Juventus, Napoli, and SS Lazio in Serie A were all in the running to sign the young player. Lazio seemed to be the club at the forefront to purchase the English winger, but Marseille offered the most lucrative deal to United for the attacker. The Red Devils found an agreement they had to accept.
Despite the mayor of Marseille condemning the signing of a charged rapist, the club went ahead with the business deal. Although the majority of football fans agree with the mayor’s sentiments—as any reasonable person would—football is a business, and it seems as though the French club just needed to sign a top player and secure a good deal in the process.
And if we were United, we would want this player off our hands as soon as possible. The management in Manchester surely want to obtain the $30+ million for Mason Greenwood that Marseille have offered so they can save money, purchase a new striker, and move on with their season.
Mason Greenwood Stats
Last season, Mason Greenwood played for Getafe and made 33 appearances, scoring eight goals and providing six assists in the process. Prior to Getafe, he had a season off—due to his time in court and criminal conviction—and didn’t play a single minute for any club team or country.
In 2022, he made his last showing for United during a season that saw him make 18 appearances and score five goals for the club.
If we were Marseille, we would be ashamed to have this player represent our club. Only time will tell what happens with Mason Greenwood in France.
