The owner of the Mark Sanchez Butt Fumble jersey has listed it on eBay for $199,999. He won the jersey at a charity auction in 2014 for $820. At the time, he was quoted as having some interesting plans for it. Jake Hendrickson, a New York Jets fan living in California, said he would save it “until we win a Super Bowl or I can get together enough money to put it on a rocket ship and shoot it to outer space because I don’t think it belongs on this planet anymore.”
His tune has apparently changed. He is now looking to sell it and make a huge profit. The eBay listing spells out why the seller is moving on from the piece and what someone will be getting with the Butt Fumble jersey.
“I acquired this Jersey from a NFL charity auction in 2014, it was undermarketed with just basic game stats. It was sent to me directly from the New York Jets office. I still have the original box it was shipped in, and Jets management signed certification. When I first got the jersey it went super viral and attracted a bunch of media attention. The story ran nationwide in print, and on air segments by nearly every national media company in the country as well as hundreds of local news outlets.
It was front page of Yahoo News (Big Deal at the time) and ESPN spent a full day with segments talking about it. I was even flown to New York for an interview. This jersey gets some serious attention, it is the ultimate 1 of 1 collector piece if you like to strike up conversations. It usually gets more attention than anything else in the room and would be a great addition to a unique collection, game room or a business.”
Can The Jets Break The Curse?
The Butt Fumble is symbolic of the New York Jets over the past few decades. They have been the laughingstock of the league, but this year, there is optimism. Aaron Rodgers has shown he can play at an elite level even at his age. Garrett Wilson has put up huge numbers despite lackluster quarterback play. Then there’s the defense. Led by Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner, this unit has suffocated opposing offenses the past two seasons.
The New York Jets have come a long way from the Butt Fumble. The franchise is looking to turn over a new leaf and become one of the dominant forces in the NFL. There is pressure on them this year as Rodgers is nearing the end of his career, and they do not have an heir apparent.
