Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban would reconsider owning an NBA team if it’s alongside “Inside the NBA” analyst and Los Angeles Lakers legend Shaquille “Shaq” O’Neal. Cuban, 66, was a former majority owner of the Mavericks from 2000 to 2023. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, native purchased the team’s majority stake for $285 million from H. Ross Perot Jr., a real estate developer best known for Alliance, Texas.
Since 2023, Cuban has maintained 27.7% of the Mavericks’ stake. But NBA team ownership isn’t completely off the table in Cuban’s future in the sports business scene, as the league could expand sooner than later. Read on for further details.
Mark Cuban As a Minority Owner
As a current minority owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban took a step back in NBA team ownership, but he would consider another run if it’s alongside Shaquille O’Neal. Cuban recently said on a “The Big Podcast with Shaq” episode, “If my kids were like ‘All right, we’re set. That’s not what we want or whatever, and it was Shaq, yeah I would look at making a comeback, but out of respect to my partners, I’d have to check with them first.”
Mark Cuban as a Majority Owner
As a former majority owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban was in charge of the Mavericks’ basketball operations from 2000 to 2023. Cuban had the final say on the team’s trades, draft picks, and free agency signings. Now, Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison reports to Patrick Dumont, the son-in-law of Miriam Adelson, the owner of Las Vegas Sands, a casino company.
Cuban explained in an “All-In Podcast” episode, “When I first bought [the Mavericks] in 2000 I was the tech guy in the NBA. I was the media guy. I had every edge and every angle … Now fast-forward 24 years later. In order to sustain growth to be able to compete with the new collective bargaining agreement, you have to have other sources of revenue. So you see other teams, in all sports for that matter, talking about casinos, talking about doing real estate development.
“That’s just not me. I wasn’t going to put up $2 billion to get an education on building. If we’re able to build a Venetian-type casino in Dallas with an American Airlines Center in the middle of it, the valuation is $20 billion. But I own 27% of that.”
Cuban Might Own an NBA Team Again
Mark Cuban might own an NBA team again, but this time, Cuban’s open to co-owning a team with Shaquille O’Neal. Cuban reportedly agreed to a partnership with O’Neal, but he also wanted to know if he’d be open to a partnership with LeBron James.
Shaq responded to Mark Cuban on a “The Big Podcast with Shaq” episode, “I would because, you know, I’m the type of owner that I let people run it. Like I do have the ability to run it. But if I ever owned a team, I would want to be more like Jerry West used to do. Just sit there with my arms crossed… If I’m gonna say something, I’d say something around the team and closed-door meetings.”
