Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban revealed the differences between him and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in a recent appearance on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast hosted by Shannon Sharpe. Sharpe, 56, is a sports commentator and a former NFL tight end best known for his nine-year tenure with the Denver Broncos.
Cuban, 66, reportedly believes there’s a big difference between how he runs the Mavericks and how Jones, 81, runs the Cowboys. Cuban’s a minority owner now, but he previously owned the majority stake in the Mavericks. He heavily participated in the Mavericks’ key decision-making, such as deciding which NBA players to draft, which NBA free agents to prioritize in the offseason, and vice versa.
Cuban’s recent revelation of the differences between him and Jones has been interesting, to put it mildly. However, Cuban and Jones also share some similarities as team owners. Read on for further details so you can make an informed decision.
Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones’ Differences
Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones are both team owners in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, but their differences distinguish them from one another. Cuban doesn’t view team ownership as a business, but Jerry Jones would disagree.
Cuban said on the “Club Shay Shay” podcast, “The difference between us is Jerry saw the whole thing as a business … When he talks about running this thing as a business and as a football team, he’s usually right. And they’ve gone 12-5, like three straight years. So, it’s not like they suck. You know how hard it is to get over the hump. It takes some luck. I just think you have to give more credit to luck. Because luck has more impact than probably anything I could do or anything Jerry could do.”
Cuban’s statement about Jones is accurate. Both men are successful businessmen worth billions of dollars but Jones’ business mindset reportedly allows him to overcome natural tendencies, deal with ambiguity, and make the most out of good days.
Cuban and Jones’ Similarities
Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones differ in mindsets towards owning and operating their respective professional sports teams, but they have similarities as team owners. Sports Illustrated recently reported that Cuban and Jones have hands-on approaches to running their teams. Sports Illustrated’s recent reporting of this interesting fact can be seen in person, in the stands, or from the press box.
Mark Cuban Might Be Onto Something
Mark Cuban might be onto something. Cuban recently mentioned that he’d have to give more credit to luck. Cuban’s reported prioritization of luck appears to give him a slight edge over Jerry Jones, as luck’s impact can increase under his watch.
For example, the Dallas Mavericks would’ve played a better NBA Finals best-of-seven series if Luka Doncic had been 100% healthy. Sometimes, players have “bad” performances, and players like Doncic, 25, must stay healthy. Plus officiating and matchups play roles in a team’s success in the regular season and postseason.
Jones purchased the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 and won three Super Bowls in 1992, 1993, and 1995. But the Cowboys haven’t made it to an NFC championship since winning their fifth Super Bowl in 1995. The Cowboys’ postseason success has been wishy-washy for nearly 30 years compared to the Mavericks’ success, as the Mavericks made it to three NBA Finals during the same time frame.
