Mariners’ Struggles Go Beyond Ownership This Year

The Seattle Mariners have had one heck of a season, and it’s still not over. The team has just lost to the Houston Astros, ending with slim chances to make it into the playoffs. With such performances, fans look for an ownership issue behind the team’s failures. However, this season’s disaster has deeper reasons than such ownership decisions.

Missed Opportunities On The Field

Questionable moves by the Mariners included trading away Eugenio Suarez and letting go of Teoscar Hernandez impacted the team. That loss in talent could have made the difference for this team. Despite its weakness and ownership, the Mariners should have fared better. On June 18, they had a 10-game lead in the American League West. It was an obvious indication that the roster had the makings to contend. But somehow, the team would blow it at the wrong times.

Dropping games to the Miami Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates did not help their cause much. It showed another outlook that defines inconsistency. Player performance has been another key reason why the Mariners have headed down the drain. Prominent players such as JP Crawford and Julio Rodriguez also flopped when it mattered most.

For example, Crawford’s batting average went down, while Rodriguez took too long to pick up his performance. In addition, these other players’ inconsistency generally has made it impossible for the team to win games. Veteran Mitch Garver was on the wrong side, which added to the woes of the team.

Coaching and Tactics Problems

Manager Scott Servais and his coaching staff were asked to coach the players to play their best game. However, at times, their strategies have not been very effective. That was the reason why their play during games was puzzling to viewers and analysts. The coaching staff needed to reassess their strategies and devise a way of playing that would adapt to the current personnel on the field.

While ownership does bear the responsibility for some decisions, the players and coaching staff also need to be held accountable. The season was all a team effort; therefore, everybody involved is culpable for the prevailing situation and commits to sorting out how to rectify them to win in the future. Such accountability will form a mighty force in having a competitive team ahead.

The Future Remains Bright

With the end of the season, the Mariners are at the perfect juncture for evaluation and coming back stronger. What went wrong needs to be identified and a strategy formulated on how the problems will be rectified. With proper adjustments, it sets up the team to do much stronger next season. The Mariners need to invest in player development and make smart moves over the offseason to become contenders.

This Seattle Mariners team is not an example of bad ownership alone, although financial decisions play a part. How good the players are and what strategy the coach puts together are equal in weight. The team needs to approach problems holistically and find solutions. The answer for the Mariners may be in holding each other accountable for their roles as working as one. It is the time when everyone comes together to take things a notch higher and see that this, next time around, is a productive season.
