Manchester United kicked off the 2024/25 league campaign against Fulham at the Old Trafford. The Red Devils had finished last season’s league campaign at a disappointing end. They ended up in the 8th position while having a negative goal difference. However, winning the FA Cup was the only solace they had.
Many challenges faced United last season, most were centered on injuries. In this new season, they’ve managed to mitigate some of the last season’s challenges. This is mainly by introducing new signings. And there’s still assurance that more new signings will be made. Manchester United went into the game against Fulham with the hopes of beginning the season in high spirits. In the end, they triumphed.

The first half began a bit sloppy for the Red Devils. Fulham broke through their possession quite a lot of times. Adama Traore terrorized the left side of the United defense. The Spaniard soon had a beautiful run down the right side, and after he squared in a pass. The result saw no reply from any Fulham player. Another close chance came for Tetey who forced a beautiful save from Onana near the edge of the 18-yard box.
Soon Manchester United found its Rhythm, and they took control of the game. A through pass from Casemiro found Bruno Fernandes. The Portugese however failed to beat Leno. Bruno Fernandes poorly played a shot that saw Fulham’s keeper react with a fine save. The Red Devils saw a lot of clear-cut chances, but they lacked the clinical edge.
Manchester United vs Fulham: Second Half
The second half saw more different dynamics in the game. It became end-to-end from both sides. However Manchester United still saw the best of chances. Soon Ten Hag decided to bring in fresh legs. The Dutchman introduced his fellow compatriots Joshua Zirkzee, and Alejandro Garnacho.
Moreover, after the substitution, it was still an end-to-end affair for both teams. Muniz had an overhead kick blocked but the ricochet nearly caught Onana unaware. The Cameronian managed to pull out a fine save. Manchester United eventually broke the deadlock. Zirkzee created a build-up from the back with the likes of Casemiro. The aftermath found Garnacho on the right side, who wasted no time squaring back to Zirkzee. The Dutchman only needed a touch to slot it past Leno, giving United the lead.
Manchester United could have made two, but Garnacho missed an empty net. This was after Rashford squared a pass for him. In the end, Man United won the game 1-0.
Zirkzee’s Influence
The 23-year-old Dutchman came off the bench to give Manchester United the victory. At the first few minutes of his arrival, Zirkzee looked a bit missing. However, he started getting a few touches, and those touches made a huge difference in the game. Zirkzee has shown to be very clinical in front of goal, while also being heavily involved in build-up. During his last season at Bologna, he was able to rack up 11 goals and four assists. Now at Manchester, he will be expected to provide more of such contributions.
