FC Twente Holds Manchester United to 1-1 Draw in Europa League

Manchester United’s frustrating night at Old Trafford saw them squander a lead again in a 1-1 Europa League draw against FC Twente. Despite Manchester United heading in as clear favorites, and after Eriksen’s early goal, he went from hero to villain, as a second-half mistake from the Danish allowed Twente to equalize, leaving United fans exasperated by the lack of finishing and having a grip on a game. A lack of urgency in the final third highlighted the team’s struggles, as they failed to turn dominance into victory. This result only fuels concerns about United’s inconsistent form and inability to secure leads and crucial wins.

Another Frustrating Night for Manchester United

Two points dropped at Old Trafford might feel like they had lost in a game where the Red Devils were expected to win comfortably and headed in as clear favorites. FC Twente would be delighted to come out with a draw as they displayed a resilient defensive performance worthy of praise. As for Manchester United, their inability to finish off games and chances continues as Ten Hag’s team had a slow start to the game but eventually found an opener thanks to inform Christian Eriksen, who fired the home side into a first-half lead.

Manchester United looked fairly comfortable after the break as Marcus Rashford individually had an exceptional game, and it seems England International is finding his form and converting it into consistency. Despite Eriksen having a fine night with a goal to show for it, he was caught on the ball inside his half, giving FC Twente an opportunity; Lammers traveled into the penalty area and fired in at Onana’s near post, giving the away side a lead they never thought they’d get. Oosting’s side looked different after they scored, and Manchester United had plenty to ponder.

Despite Ten Hag bringing on firepower with Alejandro Garnacho, who showed some spark, along with Hojlund and Mason Mount, they were unable to get the winner against a dogged FC Twente defense. The keeper, Lars Unnerstall, made an outstanding save in the last minutes to deny Harry Maguire from scoring the winner and earn his team a well-deserved draw.

Struggles Continue for Ten Hag

Another night of disappointment for Ten Hag just after the draw against Crystal Palace. The Dutchman would feel these are the games his side should be comfortably winning. He would be most concerned about United’s attacking side, as has been the case since the season began. The amount of chances not being converted seems to be the most highlighted problem. Despite having an xG (Expected goals) of 1.27 today against FC Twente, they failed to make the most of it yet again, eventually dropping two valuable points in their UEFA Europa League campaign.

What’s Next?

Up next for Manchester United is a trip to FC Porto in the UEFA Europa League, and FC Twente will host Jose Mourinho’s Fenarbache. In the Premier League, United host Tottenham Hotspur, which can be difficult for Ten Hag and his men. To gain three points, Ten Hag would require the absolute best from his team. Spurs are playing Qarabag FK in the Europa League tonight (September 26), which could help United given the congested schedule.
