4 Players Who Could Leave Manchester United Before Deadline Day

Erik ten Hag Manchester United

Manchester United have had an extremely busy transfer window under the leadership of INEOS. Under the leadership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, this is United’s first transfer window and it is safe to say that they have made significant progress. Rather than going for the most attractive options on the market, they have prioritized their team and looked for the looping holes within their squad. Moreover, they have shown signs of ruthlessness with Mason Greenwood, Donny Van de Beek, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka shown the door. The interesting thing is that there can be a lot more players leaving in this window.

Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial have left the club either because of contract termination or because they are unable to get a new contract. However, United have replaced all of these guys instantly. The Red Devils have signed Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui. With the deadline day fast approaching, United are trying to make some late additions to the squad. However, they would need to remove more players from the squad to comply with the Financial Fairplay (FFP) rules. Here are the four players that could be shown the door:

4. Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho came to Manchester United in 2021 with a lot of expectations. Apart from tearing up the Bundesliga with prolific numbers in goals and assists, some sentiments were attached to this move. The Englishman was a former Manchester City academy graduate who wasn’t given a proper running under Pep Guardiola. Hence, United fans thought that he would wear the red of their club and come up with a point to prove against his former club. However, things just haven’t worked out for Sancho.

Under Erik ten Hag, things have gone from bad to worse for the former Borussia Dortmund man as he broke his relationship with the Manchester United manager. He was eventually loaned back to Dortmund, where he contributed heavily to making the Bundesliga giants reach the Champions League final. Hence, the only positive for the United fans is that his performances recently for Borussia Dortmund have maintained his value in the transfer market. However, Sancho’s future will unlikely be at Manchester United beyond this season, and it’s better for both parties to part ways.

3. Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay could be one of the players who can get sacrificed to fund the Manual Ugarte transfer. The Scottish footballer has immensely contributed to the Manchester United squad since his emergence to the first team in 2017. Last season, he scored double-figure goals for the first time. However, his indiscipline in the middle of the park has often come under criticism. With the signing of Joshua Zirkzee, his involvement as an attacking threat could get even more limited.

Fulham initially tried to sign McTominay, but that move appears to have broken down. Now, the biggest links regarding the United midfielder are coming from Napoli. New manager Antonio Conte is looking to refresh his side after an abysmal start to their Serie A campaign. The Naples lost 3-0 to Verona on the opening weekend. The profile of McTominay seems to attract the former Italian manager, who always prefers tall players in the box in his setups. However, this move could move till the deadline day.

2. Christian Eriksen

Christian Eriksen was bought for free during the first summer with Erik ten Hag as manager. The Danish midfielder came on a free after a successful short-term spell at Brentford. Eriksen formed a solid midfield foundation in the first season with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes. Casemiro played as a defensive midfielder, whereas Eriksen used to come deep, take the ball, and make decisive plays for the attacking players to bounce. His passing accuracy and weight of passes made him a delightful player not just at Manchester United but also in his Premier League years at Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the involvement of Eriksen has declined with the addition of new midfielders. With the potential signing of Manual Ugarte, his game time is going to decrease even further. Hence, he should prioritize his football and look for opportunities elsewhere. After all, he came to United on a free and the club doesn’t have anything to lose in case they let Eriksen go.

1. Victor Lindelof

Victor Lindelof was signed by Manchester United in 2017 to create a solid partnership with Eric Bailly under the management of Jose Mourinho. However, neither the Portuguese coach stuck around and Bailly also left the club despite showing some flashes of his talent. Moreover, the signings of Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane made Lindelof a second-choice defender. Despite the turbulent defense, Lindelof has never been able to take opportunities whenever they’ve been presented to him. Now, with the signings of Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro, his chances of getting first-team minutes appear more slim than ever.

Although Varane and Willy Kambwala have left the club, Manchester United still have Maguire and Jonny Evans, who returned to the club last summer. Hence, it would be best for the Swedish defender to consider his opportunities elsewhere. In the seven seasons he has been at Old Trafford, Lindelof has made 259 appearances with 45% of those appearances coming from the bench. With the new signings this summer, the number of chances in the team sheet is going to decline further.
