Manchester United have a lot to worry about when they look at their last season’s stat versus where they hoped to end up. Due to numerous injuries in the defensive line, United had players like Casemiro and Martinelli stepping in to do a job that wasn’t in their wheelhouse, leading to tons of goals against, missed scoring opportunities, and a lack of cohesion on the pitch.
But, it looks as though things are turning around for the Mancunian side. They just played a pre-season friendly match against Real Betis to see how they would stack up against another top-tier side in Europe — and one player stood out in particular. How will the club fare this season?

Manchester United recently won a friendly against Real Betis, one of the top sides in La Liga in Spain. Real Betis ended last season in seventh place, coming in behind the big clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona. They finished the 2023-2024 campaign with 14 wins in 38 matches, earning 57 points on the table and coming just one win short of making the top six. A feat that would’ve seen them in the Europa League group stage.
Since they are among one of the best teams in Spain, and feature big-name players like Bellerin and Adrian, Manchester United thought this would be a tough choice for a pre-season match to get them ready for the upcoming Premier League season in just a couple of weeks.
Breaking Down The Game
Manchester United earned the three points in this pre-season game with a 3-2 win, with Rashford, Diallo, and Casemiro all netting in the first half for the English side. Manchester had 12 shots, with six on target, compared to Real Betis’ 13 shots, with three on target. The stats look quite even, which shows just how intense this game was.
Manchester United had 48% possession vs. Real Betis’ 52%, with Real Betis having just 25 more passes than the English side during the game. It was a back-and-forth type of match, with players battling for every single ball and seeing who would come out on top in the tense 90 minutes.
During the game, one player stood out to the coaches, players, and fans who were watching. Amad Diallo, one of United’s goal scorers, was a name that was echoed throughout the stadium long after the game was over. He has continually shone this pre-season, showing ten Hag why he should always be in the starting eleven for the team.

At just 22 years old, Diallo is still a young player — but he is currently showing why he should be on the pitch in the Prem this season. He began his career at Atalanta before moving to Manchester United in 2021, where he still plays now. He went on loan to Rangers in 2022 and Sunderland shortly after, making 37 appearances for the Championship League club and scoring thirteen goals as a 20-year-old.
Now, he hopes to break into the starting squad for the Red Devils this season. If Manchester wants to do better than they did last year, which is a must-do, including young and energetic wingers and midfielders like Diallo could be the key.
Manchester United start their next Premier League season against Fulham on August 16 at home at Old Trafford. If they can begin the 2024-2025 campaign with three points, this will start them off on the right foot heading into the next match against Brighton. United will hope to break into the top six, at least, for the upcoming campaign so they can have a shot at playing European football next year.
