Manchester United Beat Fulham 1-0 in Leadup to Opening Day

Manchester United started their bid for a promising 2024-2025 Premier League campaign with yet another pre-season victory. After confirming the extension of ten Hag as the manager that will see the Dutch leader in charge for at least another two years, and securing promising players during the summer transfer window, United looks to be in good spirits yet again after a poor last season.

Manchester United faced off against Fulham and used some of their new players to make a statement with a resounding 1-0 victory over a good-looking Fulham side. Will they be able to keep this form heading into the first match of the season this weekend?

Manchester United vs. Fulham – How it Happened

Zirkzee, the new signing for the Red Devils, was the man who was the hero in the last game against Fulham, coming in off the bench to score the goal that would see Manchester United head into the dressing room after the match full of smiles. He scored a late winner to secure the victory, but it was far from being a convincing win.

The striker from Bologna, a top-tier Serie A side in the Italian league, was purchased from the old club for almost $40 million, making him a good deal in the transfer market if he could deliver — and he did. He got the perfect technical touch on a whipped-in cross from Garnacho to beat the goalkeeper and give Untied the victory in the 87th minute of play.

Maybe the new promise by Ratcliffe and Ineos to give ten Hag more time as the manager, or the new signings, spurred on the Red Devils and gave them so much more energy, hope, and promise than we saw last season. The team has better vibes and chemistry than they did all last year, so United fans will hope they can keep this going into the first match this weekend.

In the game, Manchester United put the pressure on Fulham as the game wore on, pressing the back line and developing counterattacks that would see them get more shots on goal. Casemiro linked up well with Fernandes, who almost beat the keeper several times. However, Fulham had their chances too, but were stopped by last-ditch defending from the back line.

Zirkzee Comes Into the Game

Ten Hag decided to sub for Joshua Zirzkee into the game with just 30 minutes remaining to see if he could be the impact substitute they needed — and he was. But, immediately after coming on, Fulham took advantage of the lack of defenders on the United side and made multiple attempts at counterattacks and chances on the break with the likes of Pereira and Traore making costly errors.

Despite the errors in the back line, Zirkzee took his chance when it was given to him. In just his seventh touch while on the field, he scored for the first time in a Manchester United jersey.
