Manchester City and Newcastle United are reportedly set to compete for Lille’s highly-rated goalkeeper, Lucas Chevalier. At 22 years old, Chevalier has emerged as one of Europe’s most promising goalkeepers, stepping up after Mike Maignan’s departure, who led Lille to the 2020-21 Ligue 1 title.
Since then, Lucas Chevalier has impressed, making 92 appearances across all competitions and securing 36 clean sheets. One of his standout performances came during Lille’s recent shock 1-0 Champions League victory over reigning champions Real Madrid. In that match, he made five crucial saves and displayed exceptional composure in goal, earning praise from the French media.
Lucas Chevalier’s as Possible Ederson Replacement at Manchester City
In the 2023-24 season, Chevalier recorded 15 clean sheets in 33 Ligue 1 matches. However, he narrowly missed the Golden Glove award, which went to Nice’s Marcin Bulka. He was also excluded from the Team of the Season, where Paris Saint-Germain’s Gianluigi Donnarumma claimed the spot. Despite these setbacks, Chevalier’s performances have not gone unnoticed, with Manchester City reportedly keeping an eye on him for the past year as a potential replacement for their current number one, Ederson.
Ederson, despite remaining Pep Guardiola’s first-choice goalkeeper, faced speculation over a move to the Saudi Pro League during the summer. While that transfer did not materialize, uncertainty surrounds his long-term future at the club. Manchester City are said to be preparing for the possibility of finding a successor, with Chevalier high on their list of candidates. Paris Saint-Germain is also believed to monitor Chevalier’s situation, especially given recent Donnarumma form fluctuations.
If Ederson decides to leave the English Premier League for any other club at the end of the season, Manchester City will have to acquire a starting keeper. Chevalier will be up there in the priority spot for the Citizens if they are to sign a keeper.
Newcastle United Keeping a Close Eye as Well on Chevalier
Newcastle United is also showing keen interest in Chevalier. The Magpies view him as a potential long-term successor to Nick Pope. They reportedly believe Chevalier’s footwork is superior to the English shot-stopper. Chevalier’s strong performances, including his display against Real Madrid, had many expecting a call-up to the French national team. However, he was overlooked for the October Nations League matches, with France manager Didier Deschamps opting for AC Milan’s Mike Maignan, Lens’ Brice Samba, and West Ham’s Alphonse Areola.
Despite being snubbed, Deschamps suggested that Chevalier is close to earning a senior call-up, hinting that his opportunity will come soon. Other goalkeepers, including Roma’s Mile Svilar and Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson, are also rumored to be on Manchester City’s radar as possible future replacements for Ederson, who is under contract until 2026. Nevertheless, Chevalier remains a top target for both City and Newcastle as they eye the future of their goalkeeping positions.
