The Manchester City keeper on the women’s team is currently in court, facing a hefty sentencing of drug possession. Although the keeper denies the charges, being in legal trouble as a professional athlete is publicity that no player, or club, wants at all. Man City will have a hard time getting people to forget about these charges if they aim to keep Keating as their chosen #1 for the upcoming season.
Manchester City Keating in Court
Manchester City keeper, and a recent call-up for Wiegmann’s England squad, is in court for drug possession. Khiara Keating appeared in court on Tuesday for possession of nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. This type of drug is either inhaled by balloons or can be used in the form of ‘poppers’, which is amyl nitrate that gives the person a ‘high’ feeling.
Keating had to attend the Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court with her mother who was charged with the same offense. However, both were granted bail with the later trial date set to September 10 — a week that is right before the beginning of the FA Women’s Super League season in England.
The FA WSL usually runs from the very beginning of October until the end of May, so if a court hearing and processing drag out longer than usual, Kheating would find herself with some scheduling conflicts heading into the preseason and the season itself. This will not only cause challenges for the team’s focus and the training schedule but potentially games where she may not be available to play. And, not to mention, the charges are nothing to scoff at. The Greater Manchester police made a statement regarding the charges for Kheating and her mother.
Khiara Keating [27/06/2004] from Manchester has been charged with possession of class C drugs [Nitrous Oxide]. She will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 23 July. These charges relate to an incident which took place on Tuesday 18 June on Queens Road.
Will Keating be charged with possession? Only time will tell. Not only would this hurt the upcoming season’s schedule, but it could hinder her reputation and future at Manchester City. plus, if she faces probation, fines, or jail time, that can all hinder her quickly progressing footballing career. Not to mention, Keating has also been called up to the England squad multiple times in the last year. Wiegmann might not want Khiara to represent the country during the time that her trial is ongoing, which can mean exclusion from upcoming tournaments.
England will play in the UEFA Women’s Euro qualifiers, with the official competition taking place in Switzerland in July 2025. If Kheating is still at trial or fighting her charges, this could jeopardize the Manchester City player’s spot on the England Lionesses team.
Khiara Keating Manchester City and England Stats
Last season, Keating had a fantastic year. She played 22 matches with Manchester City in the regular season and four matches for the FA WSL Cup. She was the number one shot-stopper for the team and appeared in almost every single game of the year. She earned her way into becoming the chosen goalkeeper after being the backup keeper in the prior two seasons.
The Manchester City keeper began her career at United before making the switch to the opposing Merseyside team in 2015, and she has never left. She went on loan to AFC Fylde and Coventry United during her time with Manchester to get more experience and regular game time. She has come into her own in the past two years, making her first appearance for the senior England team in 2023.
