Manchester City could be in hot water, yet again, after facing intense backlash and criticism from fans, pundits, commentators, other players, and coaches. City has always been at the center of controversy, whether it is because of their players, tactical style, managerial decision, or financial issues.
And in this case, the latter is the reason why the club is currently at the mercy of public opinion. Manchester city has caused numerous issues in the top tier of English football throughout the years, causing concerns over contracts, fair pay, transfers, and acquiring players and paying them too much for their current budget. Overspending leads to an unfair advantage in the league, leaving lesser-funded teams at the bottom of the table and those with the most money at the top.
Manchester City Causes Financial Issues in the Premier League
Manchester City has had years and years of success in the top flight of English domestic football, most recently winning the 2023-2024 season with talented players like Phil Foden and Erling Haaland. But, fans and commentators are noting how City’s distrust of the financial system and lack of rule-following has made it hard to back this club.
They are currently dealing with over 100 FFP charges, meaning that they have consistently, and knowingly, broken the rules in terms of spending caps and player fees. Although they have yet to be penalized for the accusations regarding monetary payment, contracts, and overspending, it is only a matter of time.
But, like typical Pep and City, they have taken matters into their own hands and decided to launch an offensive instead of sitting and waiting for the result. The club has decided to start a separate legal action against the Premier League to fight the charges against the club.
However, Manchester City’s beginning legal action against the Premier League could be the downfall of the English top flight of football, spurring outcry and outrage from all of the fans. City beginning the legal threat has started an internal battle between the English owners of the league and the UAE parties, who contribute the majority of the money to the club.
Many critics, like Rory Jennings from talkSPORT, believe this legal action is the beginning of the end of the club.
‘This I believe is due to trying to create as much chaos as possible and a league cannot function if the teams do not adhere to and respect the rules of that league. I think this is damaging. This whole thing is troubling. If somehow Manchester City wins this, the Premier League as we know it will cease to exist.”

Manchester City vs. Premier League
So, the real question is – why is this happening?
Manchester City is trying to counteract the league’s legal action against the club for breaking the Associated party Transaction rules. Members of City’s camp claim that the allegations against the club, worth more than 150 pages of legal documents, are unfounded, unlawful, and ‘discriminatory’.
City alleges the majority of the claims filed by the Premier League were ‘tyrannical’ and untrue. The claims were filed after Saudi Arabian ownership took over much of the club. The purpose of the new rules in the Premier League is to prevent overspending and spending unlimited amounts of money on transfers and upgrades to club infrastructure.
