One option as a Manchester City midfielder for Pep Guardiola as we get deeper into the 204-2025 season could be on his way out of the door after just two games in the Prem. since the transfer window closes on Friday, after the season has already started, teams are scrambling to secure players, finalize their starting eleven, and keep players who are sitting on the bench.
But, it seems as though Manchester City might not be able to retain a mid-20s player who has other options and guarantees more minutes on the pitch.
Manchester City Midfielder to Serie A
Manchester City midfielder, Matheus Nunes, could be heading to Serie A in Italy if everything goes according to plan. The 25-year-old struggles for playing time currently under Pep Guardiola, and we can’t blame him. The other midfield options, like DeBruyne, Foden, Kovacic, and even academy players, have a really strong base in the middle of the park and possibly more favoritism by Pep. Therefore, Nunes could get next to minutes this campaign.
He understands it could be his best career move to go elsewhere. Fortunately, a team has already made it known they are extremely interested in getting him into their side before the transfer window closes in just three days. Atletico Madrid is keen to sign Nunes and provide him with the training, playing time, and consistency that he needs at this stage in his career.
And it seems to be a smart move. Gundogan just returned to City last week on a free transfer from Barcelona, so Manchester City’s midfield vacancies are even less than they were a few days ago. And with Gundogan being one of Pep’s favorite-ever players, Nunes knows he has no chance.
Matheus Nunes in Manchester City
Unfortunately for Nunes, time at Manchester City hasn’t been all he thought it would be. He arrived in England back in 2022 but has failed to take off in the Premier League.
Nunes began his youth career for Ericeirense in his home country of Brazil. He stayed at the same club and progressed into the senior team, making his debut when he was just 18 years old. Then, he moved to Sporting CP in Portugal where he made an instant impact, earning 76 appearances and scoring seven goals in the process.
After his breakout season in 2019, he caught the attention of Premier League clubs. Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Nunes in 2022, where he went on to make 36 appearances, but only netted one time for the club. Even with his low goals and assists numbers for the club, Manchester City took a chance on the midfielder and signed him in 2023. But, since then, he has only made 18 appearances for the team — and never scored.
