AEK Athens have officially signed former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial, who left Old Trafford at the end of June after not receiving a new contract. Martial, a free agent over the summer, attracted interest from several clubs, but it is now confirmed that the Greek club AEK Athens has secured his services.

The 28-year-old Frenchman’s arrival was announced by AEK Athens on social media, while Manchester United also released a statement wishing Martial success in his next chapter. “Anthony Martial has signed for Greek club AEK Athens following his departure from Manchester United earlier this year,” read the statement on United’s website.

Anthony Martial joins a team with a strong domestic presence under head coach Matías Almeyda. AEK Athens were champions in 2023 and finished second last season, narrowly behind PAOK. However, despite their domestic achievements, AEK will not be competing in Europe this season, as they were knocked out of the UEFA Conference League by Armenian club FC Noah in the play-off round.

Upon his departure from Manchester United, Martial shared an emotional message on social media, expressing his gratitude to the club: “Manchester United will always be in my heart. This club has left its mark on my career and offered me an incredible opportunity to play in front of you. I’m leaving to take on new challenges, but I’ll always be a Red Devil and will continue to follow the club’s results with passion.” says Anthony Martial.

Anthony Martial’s Impressive Stats at Manchester United

Martial originally joined Manchester United from Monaco in 2015, and over his time with the Red Devils, he made 317 appearances, scoring 90 goals and registering 47 assists. His most successful season in front of goal came during the 2019-20 campaign when he scored 23 goals across all competitions. However, his final season at Old Trafford was plagued by injuries, limiting him to just 19 appearances and two goals.

AEK Athens, who have won the Greek Super League 13 times, are off to a strong start in the current season. They are currently topping the Greek Super League with three wins from their first four matches, offering Anthony Martial a chance to revive his career. Martial could be set to feature in their upcoming match against Athens Kallithea, although he is expected to need some time to regain full match fitness, having not played competitively since December due to injury setbacks.

The forward, who has earned 30 caps for France and scored twice, has not played for his national team since 2021. His stint at AEK could provide him with a platform to potentially return to international football. Consistent injuries have been the biggest cause of concern for the 28-year-old Frenchman. Once touted as one the biggest prodigies in world football, the forward’s market rate has significantly decreased over the year.

It will be exciting to see how his new chapter in Greece will turn out. The fans are hopeful that see the old flamboyant version of his on the pitch and help AEK Athens secure another major trophy this season.
