Man City’s Hearing For Epic 115 Charges Begins Today

Man City

The long-awaited independent hearing regarding Man City’s alleged 115 violations of Premier League financial regulations started on Monday. The hearing has been labeled by British media as the “sports trial of the century.” It is anticipated to go on for about two months. The goal is to have the final verdict, along with any potential appeals, wrapped up by the end of the 2024-25 season.

The hearing of Manchester City’s 115 charges for suspected breaches of Premier League financial regulations began on Monday. In February 2023, Man City faced charges and was referred to an independent commission after a thorough four-year investigation. Reports suggest that Man City may have violated its financial regulations during the period from 2009 to 2018. Man City has emphatically denied all allegations, asserting that its position is backed by a “comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence”.

The Premier League contends that Manchester City violated regulations mandating the club submit “accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the club’s financial position”. This information pertains to club financial revenue, which involves sponsorship funds and running costs. Man City have also been charged with failure to cooperate. As the Premier League investigation started, Manchester City firmly declared the allegations to be “entirely false.” The club asserted that the claims, initially reported by the German newspaper Der Spiegel, stemmed from “illegal hacking and out of context publication of City emails.”

What Happens If Man City Is Found Guilty?

If Man City is found guilty of some or all of the charges, they could get fined a lot of money. They also stand the risk of getting a points deduction, and the current Premier League champions could get relegated from the Premier League.

The Abu Dhabi United Group of Sheikh Mansour bought City in 2008. Since then, they have won eight Premier League titles, one Champions League, three FA Cups, six League Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

What Pep Guardiola Thinks

Manchester City’s coach Pep Guardiola said last Friday that the team was innocent until proven guilty.

It starts soon and then [hopefully] finishes soon. An independent panel will decide, and I am looking forward to the decision,” Guardiola told a news conference. “We’re going to see. I know what people are looking forward to, what they expect, I know, what I read for many, many years. “I am not a lawyer. [Striker] Erling [Haaland] is not a lawyer. Everyone is innocent until proven guilty.

Man City is being charged with not giving correct financial information; not being clear about how much players and managers were paid; breaking Premier League and UEFA rules about financial fair play, and not cooperating with Premier League investigations.
