Both Manchester City and Chelsea are facing the risk of being excluded because of financial fair play violations. This means that they might not be able to compete in the league.
After punishments to Everton and Nottingham Forest, Financial Fair Play has become a major talking point once again.
Reasons For Possible Exclusion For Man City and Chelsea
Man City got hit with a whopping 115 violations of financial fair play rules back in February 2023. And if they are proven guilty, they might just face the ultimate punishment: exclusion from the Premier League.
According to sources, a group of experts will begin reviewing Chelsea’s case later this year. The Blues haven’t been charged yet, but some financial violations were discovered last summer during Roman Abramovich’s tenure.
UEFA hit the Blues with a hefty £8.6m fine. But the Premier League’s investigation is still in progress. There’s a chance the punishment is exclusion if the club is found guilty.
Other Punishments Excluding Man City and Chelsea
Everton formerly faced 10 10-point deduction, but was later reduced to 6 points after appeal.
In November, the club got hit hard with a 10-point deduction for breaking the profit and sustainability rules (PSR) during the three years leading up to 2021-22. Everton immediately dropped into the relegation zone from 14th place on the table.
The Premier League released a statement saying that Everton FC has appealed against the sanction imposed on them. The appeal focuses on nine different grounds, all related to the severity of the punishment rather than disputing the fact of the breach itself.
The three-person appeal board concluded that the independent commission, which handed down the 10-point penalty, made some legal errors. They found two specific grounds where mistakes were made.
The appeal board had something to say about the commission’s decision. They believed that the commission made a mistake by not considering the available benchmarks. They also mentioned that a six-point sanction was “broadly in line” with the guidelines set by the English Football League (EFL). To support their point, they even used Sheffield Wednesday’s six-point deduction in 2020 as a reference.
The commission so believed that Everton was “wrong” to be punished for not being completely honest about their new stadium debt with the Premier League. The club is currently 16 on the table, although the club is facing another possible point deduction.
Nottingham Forest has been deducted four points for breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).
Due to the deduction, the club’s points will go down from 25 to 21. This means they’ll drop to 18th place, putting them inside the relegation zone.
Conclusion
Some fans have tagged the committee as being biased because punishment doesn’t affect big clubs. We await to see if things change.
