Ah, The New Yankees. What is it about the mere mention of the name that stirs emotions in most sports fans? Emotions such as love, hate, excitement, frustration, reverence, disgust, adoration, or contempt. Love them or hate em’. The Bronx Bombers elicit something in fans that draws them to the team, positively, or negatively, but rarely something in the middle.
This series will not only chronicle the history of the Yankees but also discuss what is behind their magic, their mystique. In Part 1 of the story, we will set the stage for the entire series and mention possible emotional trigger points for people when they hear the team’s name. Then each successive part will highlight great moments in the team’s history and what has enhanced this magic of the New York Yankees. I hope you enjoy the series.
What is it About Those Yankees?
What triggers your emotions when you think about the Yankees? Is it the bevy of stars that have played for the team? Names include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra. Or if you are a newer fan, it could be Reggie Jackson, Ron Guidry Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, or Aaron Judge.
Or is it the moments in history that you will never forget? Ruth calling his home run in the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs. Gehrig’s farewell speech. Joe D’s 56-game hitting streak. Don Larsen’s perfect World Series game.
Other Great Moments
Or maybe it’s Maris breaking the Babe’s home run record. “Mr. October’s” three home runs in Game 6 of the 1977 World Series. “Bucky f*cking Dent.” Jeter’s “flip” in the 2001 playoffs. Or maybe a combination of your favorite Yankees players and moments.
