Shocking Luka Doncic Stat Comes to Light After NBA Finals

Luka Doncic trying to climb the MVP Ladder

Recently, a shocking Luka Doncic stat has come to light after the 2024 NBA Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics. The Celtics defeated the Mavericks in five games for their league-leading 18th NBA championship. Doncic, 25, is arguably one of the best NBA players. The 25-year-old is also one of the favorites to win the NBA MVP for 2024-25.

Doncic’s inconsistent dunk attempts show that he hasn’t been dunking the basketball often. Doncic previously dunked the basketball consistently, most notably during his rookie NBA season with the Mavericks in 2018-19. Here’s everything you need to know about the 25-year-old’s shocking stat.

Luka Doncic’s Inconsistent Dunk Attempts

Luka Doncic’s inconsistent dunk attempts are arguably a huge problem, as he used to dunk the basketball more consistently.

ClutchPoints recently posted on X, formerly Twitter, “Luka Doncic’s game has definitely evolved — WAY less dunking than in his rookie season. What do you think of Luka’s change of approach to his game?”

ClutchPoints’ recent post on X was arguably a solid conversation starter. Doncic threw down just two dunks for 2023-24, which was a far cry from his 25 dunks for 2018-19. Although Doncic’s 25 dunks were far from other NBA stars’ average of 100 dunks per season, a lopsided 25:2 ratio has been a cause of concern in recent days.

Luka Doncic’s Change of Approach

Luka Doncic’s change of approach to his dunk attempts and numbers has significantly changed over six years. According to Basketball Reference, .022% of Doncic’s field goal attempts were dunks during his rookie NBA season in 2018-19. But that percentage declined to just .001% during his sixth NBA season in 2023-24.

Doncic’s dunk numbers have been trending in a similar direction for most of his NBA career so far. Only .012% of his shots were dunk attempts in 2019-20, as the trend continued with .008% in 2020-21, .006% in 2021-22, and .010% in 2022-23 before his career-low of .001% in 2023-24.

Luka Doncic’s Overall Performance in 2023-24

Luka Doncic’s dunk numbers concern the Dallas Mavericks fans and media members, but the primary reason remains unclear until further notice. Perhaps Doncic has realized that he doesn’t need to excel in the dunk department to succeed as an NBA player, as he’s already an arguably excellent finisher around the basket. But we’ll see what happens.

Doncic’s overall performance was arguably the best in the NBA for the 2023-24 NBA season. Doncic led the NBA in points per game with a career-high 33.9 on a 48.7% field goal percentage, along with a career-high 38.2% from the three-point line. In addition, Doncic also finished 2023-24 with career-high averages in assists per game with 9.8 and rebounds per game with 9.2.
