Dallas Mavericks Point Guard Luka Doncic is the lone active assist leader in RotoWire’s top assist leaders among the Mavericks. It’s apparent that RotoWire’s top five list is subjective, but Doncic, 25, should feel honored by the recent ranking from the Madison, Wisconsin-based company that specializes in fantasy sports news and fantasy-style games, respectively.
The Mavericks were originally founded in 1980. Since then, Dallas has made 25 NBA playoff appearances and won the 2011 NBA championship. The Mavericks’ styles have varied over the years, but their career assist leaders are reasonably ranked by companies such as RotoWire. Read on for RotoWire’s top five list.
RotoWire’s Top 5 List
RotoWire’s top five list highlighted the five best players in the career assist leaders section. The RotoWire-written list started with former Point Guard Derek Harper, who played for the Dallas Mavericks from 1983 to 1994, as No. 1 and ended with current point guard Luka Doncic, who has been playing for the Mavericks since 2018, as No. 5. Here’s the top five list, courtesy of RotoWire. Here’s a summary of RotoWire’s list.
1. Derek Harper — 5,111 Assists
Former NBA Point Guard Derek Harper played 17 seasons in the NBA, including two stints with the Dallas Mavericks. He appeared in at least 77 games in each of his first eight seasons. He averaged 7.9 assists per game in the 1986-87 NBA season. He then averaged at least seven assists in each of the next four seasons. As a whole, he averaged 5.9 assists per game as a member of the Mavericks.
2. Brad Davis — 4,524 Assists
Former NBA Point Guard Brad Davis bounced around the league, but he eventually found a home in Dallas, where he played 12 consecutive seasons with the Dallas Mavericks before his NBA career ended. He appeared in at least 80 games in six of those seasons with the Mavericks. He established himself as a solid playmaker after averaging at least 6.2 assists in five seasons. He averaged a career-high 7.2 assists per game in the 1982-83 NBA season.
3. Jason Kidd — 4,211 Assists
Current Dallas Mavericks head coach and former NBA point guard Jason Kidd began and ended his career with the Mavericks. He won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award with the Mavericks in 1994-95 after averaging 11.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 7.7 assists, and 1.9 steals per game. He appeared in a total of 500 games for the Mavericks. He helped guide the Mavericks to their first and only NBA title in 2011 after averaging 33 minutes in 80 games.
4. Dirk Nowitzki — 3,651 Assists
Dallas Mavericks legend and former NBA Power Forward Dirk Nowitzki spent his entire career in Dallas, Texas. He led the Mavericks to the 2011 NBA championship and earned the NBA Finals MVP award the same year. He was named the NBA MVP in 2006-07. He also finished in the top 10 in NBA MVP voting nine times. He finished his NBA career with an average of 2.4 assists per game and played in 1,522 games with the Mavericks.
5. Luka Doncic — 3,317 Assists
Dallas Mavericks star Point Guard Luka Doncic is the only active member on RotoWire’s top five list. He has been impressive in already reaching the top five. He’ll enter the 2024-25 NBA season with an average of at least eight assists. In 2023-24, he averaged 33.9 points, 9.8 assists, and 9.2 rebounds per game. He also won the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 2018-19.
RotoWire’s Luka Doncic Ranking
RotoWire’s No. 5 ranking of Luka Doncic was perfectly understandable, as Doncic has just 3,317 assists compared to Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Brad Davis, and Derek Harper. However, Doncic’s ranking was quite impressive, as he had already reached the top five. He has only been playing for the Dallas Mavericks and in the NBA for five years since 2018. The Mavericks drafted Luka Doncic with the third overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft out of Real Madrid.
Luka Doncic Shines As Active Member
Luka Doncic has been shining as an active member of the top five list of career assist leaders. Doncic has yet to win an NBA championship as a member of the Dallas Mavericks but he has won the 2018 EuroLeague championship and was named the 2018 EuroLeague MVP and 2018 EuroLeague Final Four MVP as a member of Real Madrid. Doncic’s strength, skill, and basketball IQ are arguably his top three talents, but cases could be made for his scoring, passing, and rebounding as well.
