Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas recently slammed Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks. Arenas, 42, is a three-time NBA All-Star from 2005 to 2007, a three-time member of the All-NBA teams from 2005 to 2007, and a 2003 NBA Most Improved Player.
Arenas’ NBA career came with highs and lows, but Arena recently made headlines for his recent comments. In a podcast episode on The OGs Podcast, the 42-year-old mentioned his beliefs surrounding the Dallas Mavericks’ construction of a team around Luka Doncic. Read on for the latest on the 42-year-old’s comments.
Former NBA All-Star Comments on Luka Doncic
Gilbert Arenas might have the answer to the Dallas Mavericks’ flaws in the 2024 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. In a recent episode of The OGs Podcast, Arenas believes that the Mavericks can’t go small—something they will likely do with Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving in the starting lineup.
“Like think of Magic Johnson with someone like Luka right? The ball is in his hands, he’s a bigger guard. You can’t go small with his talent. Going small hurts him. You can’t have Kyrie at the two, Klay 6’7″ at the three, then you got 6’8″ at the four. That’s now how you win with this guy.”
Former NBA All-Star Comments on Dallas Mavericks
Gilbert Arenas commented on the Dallas Mavericks in the same podcast episode on The OGs Podcast.
Aside from comparing Luka Doncic’s situation to Magic Johnson, Arenas believes the Mavericks must surround Doncic with very big players. Arenas’ belief makes sense, as Doncic can berate big players on the court, but going small can expose Doncic’s flaws.
“You have to go big … You have to go seven foot because now, who has to guard him? You can’t hide it, now he gets to pick apart and now when he’s coming down the lane he gets to do whatever he wants. You have to have a big lineup with Luka. When you put smaller guys around Luka, it hurts him. He’s gonna get his numbers, but that’s not how you win. You gotta have big shooting guards, his shooting guard should be like 6’8″.”
Former NBA All-Star’s Critics
Gilbert Arenas, who played for the Memphis Grizzlies in 2012 for his final NBA season, has drawn attention to himself with his recent comments surrounding Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks.
Arenas was a good player for the Grizzlies in the early 2010s. But, right now, Memphis missed the 2024 NBA playoffs as an arguably rebuilding team. If Memphis wants to surprise their critics, they might have to worry about getting past Dallas in the Southwest Division of the NBA.
