Dallas Mavericks’ Luka Doncic Earns Point Guard Spot

Luka Doncic

Dallas Mavericks player Luka Doncic is ranked as the No. 1 point guard among the NBA’s best, according to Frank Urbina at HoopsHype. Urbina and HoopsHype recently compiled a list of the 30 top point guards for the 2024-25 NBA season, where they ranked Doncic ahead of Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

“Dallas Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic checks in at No. 1 in our point-guard rankings, an easy decision considering the season he just had and the career’s worth of evidence we have on him,” Urbina wrote.

HoopsHype‘s list can be debated by fans and media members. This was a far cry from last season’s NBA MVP race. Doncic, 25, put up historic numbers but they were not enough. He ended up trailing both Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic and Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokic in the MVP race.

Despite that snub, Doncic had a lot to celebrate. He won the ESPY for the NBA’s Best Player. Doncic also has been gaining even more recognition for his basketball talent and skill set.

Luka Doncic Finishes In Third Place

Dallas Mavericks star Doncic had an MVP-caliber season. Doncic’s third-place finish was the highest in this category for him in his career. He has been in the NBA since 2018 after being selected third overall by the Atlanta Hawks

Doncic was traded to Dallas in exchange for the draft rights of future Atlanta point guard Trae Young and a protected 2019 first-round pick. Young has been successful for the Hawks, but Doncic’s play kind of made him become a player Atlanta fans might view as one who got away.

Doncic led the NBA in scoring with 33.9 points per game, along with 9.2 rebounds, 9.8 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. He also shot 48.7 percent from the floor and 38.2 percent from the three-point line, a career best. HoopsHypes found these statistics worthy of placing Doncic at the top of its point guard list.

Doncic led Dallas to the 2024 NBA Finals, but they lost to the Boston Celtics in five games. His consistent improvement over the years has made him a player to watch. Yet he could use a good supporting cast around him.

Doncic Could Still Get MVP

Dallas Mavericks fans have known about Luka Doncic’s greatness since he signed his rookie contract on July 9, 2018. Doncic made his regular season debut on October 17, 2018, where he recorded 10 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. He has carried the Mavericks on his back and helped arguably bad rosters make the playoffs, including the Western Conference finals.  Mavericks fans shouldn’t be surprised to see Doncic win his first MVP award in the near future.
