Luis De La Fuente Worries Lamine Yamal’s Fitness Ahead of Nations league

Luis De La Fuente

Luis De La Fuente ahead of Spain’s Nations League game against Serbia has addressed some issues. These were issues concerning the fitness of certain key players and the like. The Spaniard has resumed his job of coaching the team ahead of some interesting fixtures in the Nations League.

Spain will start their Nations League games facing Serbia on the 5th of September. They will continue the league campaign with their next game against Switzerland. La Roja had last played a game since the Euro 2024 showdown in July against England. This was a game they won 2-1 clinching the tournament. Luis De La Fuente will however desire his side to continue its winning momentum, to secure the Nations League the second time in a row.

The Spanish Coach has spoken ahead of Spain’s game against Serbia. He has expressed his concerns over the fitness of certain players. The Spaniard specifically spoke about Lamine Yamal’s fitness before the game and he said: “The discomfort is a blow, nothing more. Let’s look no further. I have seen him calm, he is a very calm boy, a young man who is very mature for his age. With us, he behaves like a person more mature than his age. We also transmit that tranquility. He has to get used to having the spotlight on him, but he’s ready for it and he’ll continue to grow and mature.”

Luis De La Fuente on Team’s State

De La Fuente continued addressing how his team will keep improving despite winning the Euros. He also spoke about the possibility of including new players and quality in the team. De La Fuente said: “We want to continue improving, growing, incorporating new players and records. And we want to continue to be the best. The competition is different every time, the rivals grow a lot and playing against Spain is another motivation. The only way to grow is to keep taking steps forward. We have to continue doing things much better.”

De La Fuente on Nations League Defense

Luis De La Fuente has spoken about the desire for his side to defend their Nations League trophy. Spain who won the last Nations League in 2022, will be hoping they can achieve the same fit this year. The Spanish Coach also referenced about his team having eyes on the 2026 World Cup. He said: “This generation of players are insatiable. We want to keep breaking records, take another step, another game more, another game more.”

De la Fuente continued: “We don’t see that legacy as a weight, we won’t allow it to be a problem. We won the Nations League. We won a Euros. Now we’re going for another Nations League. Then we will try the World Cup. Some genius said the Nations League is a minor trophy but it’s the best 16 teams in Europe: some minor trophy! To qualify it’s harder than the Euros. But we will go to win, like we always do.”
