Luis Arraez Makes MLB History with 3rd Batting Title

Luis Arraez, San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres have been loving everything that first baseman Luis Arraez has brought to their team since trading for him this season. What that includes is some hardware as he was pulled in the final game of the regular season against the Arizona Diamondbacks and has officially locked up his third batting title with his .314 batting average this season. However, the MLB history comes with this being his third team to win a batting title with. Let’s take a closer look at Luis Arraez and what makes him so special at the plate.

Luis Arraez has been one of the best contact hitters in this generation of Major League Baseball as after he was pulled from the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks and officially won the 2024 NL Batting Title. This is his third consecutive batting title and the history comes as he has now done so for three different teams. Luis Arraez also has won three consecutive batting titles now as he won the 2022 AL Batting Title with the Minnesota Twins and the 2023 NL Batting Title with the Miami Marlins.

He is one of eight players to win the batting title in both the American and National League, with the others being:

  • Nap Lajoie (1901 A’s; 1903-04, 1910 Cleveland)
  • Rogers Hornsby (1920-25 Cardinals; 1928 Braves)
  • Lefty O’Doul (1929 Phillies; 1932 Dodgers)
  • Jimmie Foxx (1933 A’s; 1932 Braves)
  • Ernie Lombardi (1938 Reds; 1942 Braves)
  • Bill Madlock (1975-76 Cubs; 1981, 1983 Pirates)
  • DJ LeMahieu (2016 Rockies; 2020 Yankees)

His .314 batting average is the lowest for a batting title since MLB Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn won the 1988 NL Batting Title with a .313 batting average. This also ruins Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani from winning the NL Triple Crown.
