On Wednesday, team officials announced that 21-year-old Louis Foster will join Rahal Lanigan Letterman Racing to race for the 2025 season. Foster, who ran in Indy NXT for Andretti Global the past season, won 8 total races, the last of which earned him the title of 2024 Indy NXT Champion. This is perhaps one of his most critical accolades to date. Foster earned 12 podiums and seven poles! He also astoundingly led 362 of 640 laps over the season. There’s no questioning the attention he brought to himself last season has caught the eyes of team owners, and he’s likely been on the team’s radar for quite some time.
Breaking Records and Making Moves
Watching how Louis Foster transfers this success into a full-fledged IndyCar race next season will be exciting. But will his Indy NXT success be enough to start him off on the right foot? Perhaps his records indicate how far he’ll take Rahal Lanigan Letterman Racing since he signed a multi-year deal with the team. The British Indy driver is no stranger to success running stints in British F3, Euroformula, Indy Pro 2000, Formula Regional, and Indy NXT.
At the start of his Indy Pro 2000 career, Foster tested with Jay Howard Driver Development before moving on to test with Exclusive Autosport in the Chris Griffis Memorial Test. There he clocked the fastest test time ever recorded and subsequently signed with the team for the 2022 season. He would win seven races for Michael Duncalfe and his team and secure victory at the season’s final race. This win was a precursor to his entering Indy NXT with Andretti Autosport in 2023 and largely contributed to his success and recent move to IndyCar for 2025, where he’ll undoubtedly break more records.
Why Louis Foster was Chosen
With his undeniable record-breaking skills behind the wheel, it’s no wonder Bobby Rahal is looking forward to having Louis Foster on board with the team come 2025. Raha feels wholeheartedly that Foster’s 2024 Indy NXT Championship win proved he will add value to the team and that he has a promising future ahead of him in IndyCar. If there’s one thing Rahal knows, it’s what it takes to be a winner on the track, having won three IndyCar championships behind the wheel himself, including the iconic Indianapolis 500 in 1986.
Since Bobby Rahal’s start as a team owner in IndyCART and more recently in the NTT IndyCar Series, he’s produced two Indianapolis 500 winners, Buddy Rice in 2004 and Japan’s famed Takuma Sato in 2020. He’s hoping to add a third to that list with Louis Foster. He’s confident he’ll be able to do so with Foster’s total eight race wins and ability to overpower Jacob Abel by 122 points, flawlessly leading every lap to dominate the Indy NXT Firestone Series.
Final Thoughts
Louis Foster’s undoubtedly heavy presence on the track as an Indy NXT driver—the achievement of winning two championships in three years and becoming the 2024 NXT Champion to close out the season—will no doubt put him at the top of his game when he’s behind the wheel starting as an IndyCar rookie. Foster will also help shed some much-needed positive light on Rahal Lanigan Letterman Racing, who found themselves in the hot seat after the FBI raided their Zionsville headquarters in September.
The 2025 season will be an interesting one with the partnership that has been forged between Foster and Rahal Lanigan Racing. The signing will turn up the heat on the track for the 2025 season and perhaps grab Bobby Rahal’s third Indianapolis 500 win and Foster’s first as an IndyCar driver. Stay tuned!
