The Los Angeles Rams are making news as it signs veteran wide receiver Quintez Cephus to its practice squad. The season has been taking a toll on the team, with some key players like Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua held out because of injuries. Let’s dive deeper and see how this might affect the Rams, what it might mean for the season, and what we can expect from Cephus.
The Injury Crisis
Injuries could be the antithesis of everything coaches need in the NFL. That’s what that strain is currently feeling for the Los Angeles Rams, who’ve had to place Puka Nacua on injured reserve after reaggravating a knee issue this week in training camp. That’s going to take him off the field for at least four games but could be longer yet. Then, Cooper Kupp is recovering from an ankle sprain and quite possibly missing an extended period himself. Losing those two stars hurts the Los Angeles Rams.
With both Kupp and Nacua out, the Rams needed to look for some depth at wide receiver. Step in: Quintez Cephus. Not a new face to the NFL, he has experienced his own set of issues. Starting his career with the Detroit Lions, some promise was shown during his rookie year. Injuries as well as other issues kept him from playing consistently.
Quintez Cephus was chosen by the Lions in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. So far as a rookie, he was able to haul in 20 receptions for 349 yards and two touchdowns. That has all gone downhill from there for him. Injuries limited his playing time to less than half of the season in 2021 and 2022. That was compounded by a suspension over gambling policy violations.
A New Beginning
Cephus is now with the Rams. He will be a new beginning in the Los Angeles Rams at the age of 26. Kupp and Nacua are two big open holes that need to be filled while they are off the field. Though he has never played in such big games, Cephus has had experience under his belt.
This is a golden opportunity for Cephus. He can prove himself and take a spot on the active roster if he stays healthy. The Rams are in such a situation today, and they need people who make big plays. That is his opportunity to shine. So far in the NFL career, Cephus has 37 receptions for 568 yards and four touchdowns in 22 games. His numbers are not intimidating, but he proves he can make contributions. Los Angeles Rams believes he could do much better than what he has achieved so far.
Team Spirit
Adding a new player can also give the team a morale boost. Cephus’s arrival will motivate other players to use this opportunity to fill some gaps left by colleagues who are injured. A good locker room dynamic is what success is founded on, and the Rams shall need everybody pulling in the same direction this season.
In summary, signing Quintez Cephus will be a strategic move for the Rams amidst so many injuries. His experience as well as skill set can go a long way in affording much-needed depth at wide receiver; hence, it will be interesting to see him undergo the vigor to bounce back. As long as the right mindset and support are present, it will not surprise anybody to find Cephus having a big impact on the Rams this season.
