BREAKING: Los Angeles Dodgers Acquire Jack Flaherty

The Los Angeles Dodgers Edman

Right before the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline came to a close, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Starting Pitcher Jack Flaherty from the Detroit Tigers. Flaherty will slide into a Dodgers pitching rotation that has been injury-riddled this season. Starting Pitchers Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, and Walker Buehler among others have spent considerable time on the IL this season. The exact terms of the deal that sent Flaherty out west are unknown at this time.

Flaherty is 7-5 this season with an ERA of 2.95. He missed a few weeks earlier this month with a back injury. He would be ninth in the league in ERA if he had enough starts to qualify. How will Flaherty fare with the Los Angeles Dodgers as they prepare for another playoff push?

Jack Flaherty Career Summary

Flaherty made his MLB debut in 2017 with the St. Louis Cardinals. He spent parts of the first seven seasons of his career in “The Gateway City.” He was dealt to the Baltimore Orioles at last season’s trade deadline. He signed with the Detroit Tigers before the 2024 campaign. Flaherty finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2018 and fourth in Cy Young voting in 2019. He has a career record of 49-39 with an ERA of 3.64.

How Will Flaherty Fit In With The Los Angeles Dodgers?

Flaherty is not the only high-profile starting pitcher acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers at this year’s deadline. The team acquired Michael Kopech from the Chicago White Sox yesterday. Flaherty joins a Dodgers pitching staff that is still one of the league’s best with injury issues all season. LA’s pitching staff is eighth in ERA, third in opposing batting average, and fifth in WHIP.

Flaherty will have to hit the ground running as the Dodgers have the league’s fourth-best record. He has some postseason success as he has a record of 1-3 with an ERA of 3,60. Flaherty looks to anchor a Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff, and team as a whole, that has the requisite talent to win their second World Series title since 2020. The first start for Flaherty in a Dodgers uniform should come later this week against the Oakland Athletics.
