The Los Angeles Dodgers are one of the top teams in Major League Baseball throughout the season but their pitching depth has been significantly tested. In a bit of news released by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, starting pitcher Dustin May will miss the remainder of the 2024 MLB season as he recovers from surgery to repair an esophageal tear.
Dustin May has not pitched this season as he was recovering from a torn flexor tendon and was set to begin a rehab assignment in the next few weeks but will be shut down indefinitely. The surgery will keep him from physical activity for the next two moths and the injury was found after May went for medical attention after throat and stomach pain.
This is one of the more unique injuries to hear in sports. While obviously a massive blow for himself, the Los Angeles Dodgers were hoping for him to help the depth of the pitching staff.
What does Dustin May’s injury mean for the Los Angeles Dodgers going forward?

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been needing some starting pitching help as they are not getting innings from their starting pitchers. The team is tied for 24th in MLB in starting pitcher innings (487.2) and 13th with a 4.04 starter ERA. They have a significant amount of pitching injuries as below is a list of the Dodgers pitchers currently on the Injured List heading into the All-Star break.
- Yoshinubo Yamamoto
- Clayton Kershaw
- Walker Buehler
- Emmet Sheehan
- Tyler Glasnow
- Shohei Ohtani (Not pitching this season but still is hitting)
- Brusdar Graterol
- Ryan Braiser
- Joe Kelly
That is a massive list as there is enough pitching to win a division just on the Injured List itself for the Los Angeles Dodgers. One thing the team has not been shy to trade away minor leaguers for players to help the team win now and this could be a result of the Dustin May injury news.
The Chicago White Sox have been one of the teams rumored to be trading starting pitching with Garrett Crochet reportedly available. That seems to make the most sense as that would help the team going forward as they wait for their starting pitchers to return from the Injured List.
