The Los Angeles Chargers took some heat yesterday when they picked tackle Joe Alt with the fifth overall pick. While Alt is arguably the best tackle in the class, many thought the team should have gone for a wide receiver with Malik Nabers and Rome Odunze on the board. However, the Chargers gambled that a wide receiver would be available later. The Chargers traded up and selected Georgia WR Ladd McConkey as the second round kicked off.

The Los Angeles Chargers made a deal with the Patriots to get the second pick of the second round. Buffalo took Keon Coleman to kick off the night, but Los Angeles didn’t want to wait. The Patriots got the 37th pick as well as the 110th pick in this year’s draft. While the night started with question marks at wide receiver for the Chargers, they now have a talented young receiver who many thought was a fringe first round talent.
Ladd McConkey never had a huge season at Georgia. In his three years, he caught a total of 119 passes for 1,687 yards and 14 touchdowns. However, part of this was due to the stacked rosters Georgia has had over the years. McConkey is a great route runner who has great hands. This is something the team desperately needs after letting go of Mike Williams and trading Keene Allen.
Offensive Outlook
The Los Angeles Chargers’ offense looks a little less bleak after this pick. This is a perfect example of why we can never judge a draft before it is over. If the team just got Alt, the question of who Justin Herbert was going to pass to is valid. Quinten Johnston struggled during his rookie season, and the depth of his position is non-existent. Ladd McConkey gets a golden opportunity to catch passes from one of the best throwers in the NFL and doesn’t have a lot of competition on the roster.
There has been lots of wheeling and dealing in the second round so far. Teams have gotten aggressive to get the fringe first-rounders. How will the Los Angeles Chargers continue to fill out the roster over the weekend?
