Lorenzo Musetti Wins 1st-Ever Olympic Medal

Lorenzo Musetti collapsed to the clay after winning the Olympic bronze medal match against Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 22-year-old has become the second Italian tennis player to win a medal in the Olympics. He also enters the history books as the first Italian to do so in the last 100 years since Uberto de Morpurgo did so in 1924.

The young Italian has had an excellent summer, reaching the semifinals of his last four tournaments, and reaching the finals in two of those. One of his semifinal appearances was at Wimbledon. The Italian overcame Gael Monfils, Francisco Comesana, and Taylor Fritz before falling to Novak Djokovic in the semifinal.

Coincidentally, both Musetti’s and de Morpurgo’s bronze medal wins happened in Paris. The 22-year-old Italian took the first set of the clash 6-4 before falling 1-6 to Auger-Aliassime in the second set. Yesterday, the Canadian won the Bronze medal in the mixed doubles category and looked like he could do the same in men’s singles with a comeback on the cards.

However, Musetti, who’s been in the form of his life this summer, picked himself up off the clay and raced to a 6-3 third-set win to claim the bronze. This will put him on the podium with Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic tomorrow after the final. Musetti started the match on top of his Canadian opponent, breaking the Canadian’s serve in the first game of the first set. However, the world No. 16 surrendered a break of his serve in the eighth game of the set to give Auger-Aliassime a way back into the set. Musetti didn’t let this dampen his spirits, however, as he broke Felix’s serve immediately after and went on to serve for the set.

The Italian Overcame The Resurgent Canadian

Auger-Aliassime came out with monstrous intensity in the second set. His serves were ferocious, securing him five aces en route to a 6-1 second-set win. The Canadian smashed 30 points past Musetti, forcing the Italian to manage a paltry 19 points all set.As the third set began, both players looked determined to take the match to the wire. The determination to each go home with the medal was evident to the players as they continuously held their serves.

It all changed at 4-3 on Felix Auger-Aliassime’s serve. The Canadian staggered in his performance, allowing unforced errors to permeate his game. This gave Musetti the room he needed to break the Canadian’s serve and position himself to serve for the bronze medal. Auger-Aliassime was undone in this match by his 33 unforced errors, which were 11 more than Musetti hit all through the contest. On the head-to-head record, both players have now defeated each other three times. Although the Italian is yet to win a title in 2024, a bronze medal in the Olympics is a good way to start.

After the match, Musetti said he was going to indulge himself as a way of celebrating his milestone victory.

“I’ve been eating plain pasta and chicken for three months, basically, so I think eating a pizza is the least I can do tonight.”

Lorenzo Musetti deserves it after the year he’s had so far. Ranked 16th on the ATP tour rankings, he’s racked up 2,075 points so far in 2024 alone and sits as the 14th-best performer on the ATP tour this year.

Tomorrow will be Super Sunday when the 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon Championships finalists clash again in another blockbuster final for the Olympic gold medal
