John Sterling was the play-by-play radio announcer for the Yankees since 1989. The longtime radio broadcaster called 5,420 baseball games during the regular season. He had a certain way of keeping fans engaged whether it was a home run or another big play on the diamond. During his career, Sterling announced 211 playoff games as well.
Early on, the 85-year-old also worked for the Atlanta Braves in the Turner Field days. That went on for five seasons in the 80’s. Many fans remember the days of Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez with the New York Yankees. Those were two Yankee greats in recent years. The longtime radio announcer has chosen to retire early due to health-related issues. His last game broadcasted was in the New York Yankees win over the Toronto Blue Jays over a week ago.
