Lleyton Hewitt Proud of Australia Despite Davis Cup Defeat

In Australia’s recent tie of the Davis Cup against Spain, they were up against a big challenge. Australia lost 2-1 but team captain Lleyton Hewitt declared himself proud of his players. This was as the team had just completed an exhausting week of traveling back from the US Open. Opinions are strong about the new format of the Davis Cup, and Lleyton Hewitt wasn’t going to stop bringing up these demands placed upon the players in terms of scheduling.

There was no shortage of pride while talking to them on the third round of today’s play. Hewitt talked about his team’s performance in trying conditions. His players had suffered many injuries; one of them was US Open doubles champion Max Purcell. He made a joke about his pain and he had just won a major title for his country. Hewitt praised the physical cost his players had taken by supporting their Australian colors and lauded their commitment and dedication.

Lleyton Hewitt spoke out on his opinion that the new Davis Cup format is ridiculous. Under the new schedule, players will have to jump from a major tournament directly into the matches of the Davis Cup, which Lleyton Hewitt said is not fair and quite exhausting. Players have witnessed the challenge of trying to be at their best while competing at the US Open before jumping to the Davis Cup, where the switch has been just very short.

Hewitt Praises Injured Australians

Lleyton Hewitt did not shy away from admitting how his team was coming into the tie. We’ve had a few guys this week pretty banged up, he admitted. Such was the case of the Australian players, who reportedly displayed in what could seem to be the best possible manner as a team considering the injuries they must have endured. Lleyton Hewitt’s appreciation for the team wasn’t just on the effort in the tie but also on staying resilient with the exacting schedule. All such spirit and dedication to the team were visible, all the more when it hurt.

In somewhat anticlimactic fashion, Australia and Spain played through to match point since each was already assured entry into the final. Chastising some of its best players and fielding with a lighter-than-usual team, Spain also readily dropped the doubles pair, Matt Ebden and Max Purcell. It ended in a rather strange fashion for the final rubber.

Conclusion

Lleyton Hewitt has been quite satisfied with his team despite their loss. It says much about the game, the spirit, and the toil of the Australian players. The schedule, along with injuries, had greatly exerted pressure on them, but their zeal did not seem to drop down. As the match is reaching the finals in Malaga, Lleyton Hewitt can be seen again galloping them on the right track along with the players. If the Australian Davis Cup campaign is to be a success, it will be by way of recovery and preparation as they move further in all their strength and grit to make a mark on the world platform.
