Liverpool remains the only top club in Europe who has failed to make any single signing. The Merseyside club started their preseason with a new coach and new management. The resignation of Jurgen Klopp had prompted a lot of disposition in the club. However, in terms of team players, only outgoings have happened.
In June it was said their new coach Arne Slot planned on assessing the squad before the club made any signings. Afterward, they discovered a holding midfielder was needed. And so the club planned on securing a no 6 position. Earlier in the month of August, Liverpool picked Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad as their main target. However, after a few days, the player chose to reject the Merseyside club.
This sets the Reds back to square 1. Nonetheless, there are possible alternatives for them before the transfer window shuts down.
Martin Zubimendi’s Rejection
Liverpool’s Sporting Director Richard Hughes, received a call on Monday evening. This was about Zubimendi choosing to stay at Real Sociedad. It was disappointing news as it was earlier reported that the 25-year-old was eager to join the club. Moreover, the rejection was suspected as Real Sociedad had tried everything possible to keep their star man.
The Basque Club even tried to increase the wage of the 25-year-old midfielder. Liverpool on the other hand showed superiority in the financial aspect, by offering the boy a higher salary option. But it seems that money couldn’t buy Zubimendi’s loyalty. Now Liverpool will move on to other possibilities. However, there has been speculation that the club might not go for another no 6 option again. But nothing is certain yet.
Possible Targets for Liverpool
A lot of rumors have been made about Liverpool’s loss of interest in signing a holding midfielder. In the advent of the club looking to hunt for a holding midfielder, some intriguing names may come to light. Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes could be an interesting option for the Reds. Although the fee demanded by the Magpies is high. Nevertheless, Liverpool could be desperate to splash the cash to secure the Brazilian.
Another name that may come up is Alan Varela of Porto. This is a 23-year-old Argentine midfielder who has been impressive at Porto. The Argentine has both great defensive and attacking qualities. However, a lot would be put into convincing the Argentine. Other names that may come up may be, Hjlumand of Sporting CP, Ugarte who is desperate to leave PSG, and Ederson of Atlanta.
Options for Liverpool Without Signing a Six
The Reds may not become incapacitated in the absence of signing a six. They have the likes of Gravenberch who has proven very handy in the position during preseason. Also, Wataru Endo is natural at the position. However, the fans may feel both players are questionable playing in that position. Gravenberch had a fair season under Jurgen Klopp, but not in the no 6 position. This can cause doubts to arise concerning him playing that role, as he hasn’t yet been proven.
Endo on the other hand is already getting older and his reliability in the long term may be questionable. Arne Slot may however make use of them well. And the players may adapt as time goes by.
