Liverpool Wants Rodrygo as Mohammed Salah’s Replacement

Liverpool have reportedly identified Real Madrid’s Brazilian forward Rodrygo as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah, whose future at the club remains uncertain. Salah’s current contract expires in the summer of 2025, and his recent comments after a 3-0 win over Manchester United hinted that the 2024-25 season might be his last at Anfield.

However, his statements were open to interpretation, with some viewing them as a push for contract talks rather than an intention to leave. No significant discussions have taken place between Salah’s representatives and Liverpool, meaning he could enter pre-contract negotiations with foreign clubs as early as January if no progress is made. As a result, Liverpool are reportedly preparing for his potential departure and have targeted Rodrygo as a successor.

Rodrygo, who has been a key figure for Real Madrid under Carlo Ancelotti, has scored three goals and provided two assists in nine matches this season. Despite a recent contract extension that includes a 1bn euros (£835m) release clause, there have been rumors about his future, particularly after Real Madrid signed Kylian Mbappe and Endrick.

Although these claims were denied, there is speculation that Real Madrid may be willing to let Rodrygo leave for the right price, and Liverpool are reportedly prepared to offer €100m (£83.5m) for the 23-year-old. Rodrygo, who joined Real Madrid from Santos in 2019, has made 225 appearances for the club, scoring 57 goals and providing 43 assists, and has won two Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles.

Meanwhile, Salah, despite his uncertain contract situation, is believed to still want to continue his career at Liverpool and Europe for a while longer, with talks expected to take place soon regarding his future. Salah’s agent recently added fuel to the speculation with a cryptic social media post regarding his client’s next steps.

How Will Liverpool Approach Rodrygo Financially

According to Fichajes, Liverpool is reportedly ready to offer around 100 million euros ($111m/£83m) for Real Madrid’s Brazilian winger Rodrygo. While Madrid is not actively looking to sell him, they do not consider him untouchable either. Rodrygo’s focus fully remains on the current season at Real Madrid and potentially winning as many titles as possible.

In football, every player can be sold for the right price. Rodrygo, who is contracted until 2028 and valued at 123 million dollars (£92m/€110m) by Transfermarkt, would become Liverpool’s record signing if this deal goes through. He would also rank among the top 20 most expensive players in football history.

Currently earning 267k dollars (£202k/€240k) per week, acquiring the former Santos player would require a substantial financial commitment from Liverpool. However, such an investment may be necessary to replace Mohamed Salah, one of the club’s greatest players. Salah, determined to break records, is now third on Liverpool’s all-time substitute goals list with 14, trailing only David Fairclough (18) and former teammate Roberto Firmino (16).
