It was a thrilling showdown at the Old Trafford, as Man Utd hosted Liverpool. Liverpool needed to maintain their winning run at Old Trafford if they desired to stay at the top. Also Manchester United needed at least a point in this game to keep their top 4 hopes up.
The Reds were pitched to be the likely winner of this game with their form this season. Recently they experienced a late-minute disappointment at the same stadium in an FA Cup match. It was expected they’d come for revenge by running riot. But yet the match proved to be very tricky once again for the Merseyside team.
Liverpool held to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford
Liverpool went into the game hoping they’ll revenge the FA Cup defeat. They started the first half in full throttle. They dominated the game effortlessly. This forced out defensive blocks and sublime saves from Onana. Soon Liverpool found the breakthrough with a fantastic acrobatic from Diaz beating the keeper. The goal was created from a corner in which Nunez’s header flicked to an unmarked Diaz. This created more tension for Man Utd allowing Liverpool to create more chances. But Liverpool failed to convert some. Great blocks also from the defense and saves from Onana helped preserve the game a bit.
It was the 2nd Half and Liverpool continued their dominance. However, a nasty error from Jarell Quansah turned the tide. The center-back’s misplaced pass was caught by Bruno Fernandes, who fired a long-range shot that beat Kelleher.
It was level, and Man Utd gained momentum. Soon a good interplay allowed an unmarked Kobbie Mainoo to swing in a curler at the far corner. Furthermore, the Red Devils already looked to punish Liverpool, with some nice attacking play. Klopp had to make some urgent changes, with Elliot and Gapko. It worked out as Elliot drifted into the box and was clattered by WanBissakka. This led to a penalty. Mohammed Salah scored the penalty to restore parity.
With seven minutes added time the Reds failed to get the winner. Although Diaz nearly got the winner in the dying minutes it was slightly off the bar. Liverpool now shares a point with Arsenal. The high goal difference of the gunners is what keeps them in second place.
What’s Next for Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp expressed a range of mixed feelings over the game. Therefore he praised the boys but spoke about how they could have performed better. After he stated that he wasn’t worried about the nine-point goal difference. Additionally, emphasis was made by him that the team’s goal is to maintain the pressure on Arsenal.
Although with the draw, they’re not a total write-off. With the likes of Jota and Trent slated to return next week, they’ll only get stronger as a team.
More tasks ahead…
Liverpool will continue their Europa League campaign against Atlanta at Anfield. Also, they resume their league title challenge at home against Crystal Palace. Jurgen Klopp will be expecting a good response from his side to maintain their title charge this season.
