One of Liverpool’s most highly decorated players and midfield engine could be headed to a team in the German Bundesliga if the Reds don’t want to sign him for another year. Sure, he is getting older, but that doesn’t mean his value is declining. This key midfielder for the Anfield team is one of the best players in the squad, but it all depends on how he fits into Slot’s new plan.
Arne Slot, the new manager, might favor younger, fitter, and faster midfielders in lieu of the veteran midfield maestro who was such a part of Klopp’s game plan. Only time will tell to see if the veteran midfielder, who is now 32 years old, will be ‘past his prime’ at Liverpool and choose to head to another country for the remainder of his career. Will he retire from football, or will the German side take a chance on the aging midfielder?
Liverpool Midfielder to Bayer Leverkusen?
One of Liverpool’s best players and most winningest memes of the squad, Matip, could be headed to Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. Although this would be a ‘step down’ in terms of quality of play, the Bundesliga team won last season and could provide Matip with more playing time than Liverpool under Slot’s new reign. Plus, at more than 30 years old, he is not getting any younger. He will also be a free agent if he leaves Liverpool, giving any other team the chance to sign the Premier League winner for the last few years of his decorated career.
Matip, who is now officially out of contract at Slot’s side, has spent eight years in England under the leadership of Jurgen Klopp, the German head coach who loved having the talented midfielder and back line member in his team. During his time at Liverpool, he made more than 200 appearances for the Premier League club.
Injury Woes
But, his last season with the Reds was unfortunately scarred by a long-term injury that saw him sidelined for the entirety of this last year. He couldn’t help his team secure the third-place finish and has found himself now without a club for the next year.
Although he is extremely coveted and has won numerous domestic and international trophies, like the FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup trophy, and Champions League trophies, his older age and injury history could put new clubs off of signing him.
Bayer Leverkusen in the Mix to Sign Matip
However, that doesn’t mean that all clubs are wary of signing Joel Matip for next season. Bayer Leverkusen are very interested in signing the ex-Liverpool midfielder to strengthen their squad and have a veteran member come into the team. The center-back and holding midfielder could rejuvenate his career and get back to fighting fitness pre-injury by signing for the Bundesliga side.
Bayer Leverkusen currently has Jeremie Frimpong, a talented Dutch player, Grimaldo, an ex-Barcelona man, Hincapie, and Tah in the back line, which would suit Matip’s experience and aerial ability at winning headers. Bayer faced off against Arsenal this week as a pre-season friendly, followed by Real Betis just two days later, one of the top teams in the Spanish La Liga. They then play the DFL Super cup Final against VfB Stuttgart the following weekend.
After the Super cup final, Leverkusen are back into the Bundesliga for next season, facing off against Carl Zeiss Jena in the DFB Pokal first round and RB Leipzig as their first game at the beginning of September. Let’s see if Bayer Leverkusen are willing to pay for Liverpool’s ex midfielder who led them to the Premier League trophy a couple of years ago.
