Liverpool are going to want a do-over of the last few weeks before their last game of the 2023-2024 Premier League season. Just mere games ago, they were in contention with Arsenal and Manchester City for the title and winner of this year. But, after a shocking defeat to Crystal Palace, and multiple issues between Klopp and the players, Liverpool’s fairytale send-off season for Jurgen has gone awry.
Taht was capped off by a terrible draw to Aston Villa at Villa Park yesterday, showing just how far the Reds have fallen in the past three weeks. Pundits, fans, and commentators were shocked at how a team could collapse so suddenly. Now, they will end the season in the tp three – which is very respectable for any club – but for a team that was so close to winning the EPL, they will surely be disappointed.
Aston Villa vs. Liverpool – How it Happened

All was looking swimmingly for Liverpool going into the last 40 minutes of the game yesterday against Aston Villa. They were up 3-1 and fighting to get even more goals on the board. But, Jhon Duran, the super sub who came on for Villa in the last 30 minutes, had other ideas in mind.
The game began with Martinez, the Villa goalkeeper, making an egregious error that saw Liverpool place one in the back of the net very early on. The keeper, who is usually quite trustworthy a stoic, had a lapse in judgment that led to an own goal just two minutes in.
But, Villa wasn’t down for the count yet. Just ten minutes later, still very early on in the second half, Tielemans netted for Villa to celebrate his return after being out the last three matches due to injury.
Tielemans didn’t have long to celebrate his come-back goal, however, as Gakpo – the young midfielder who has controlled Liverpool’s midfield this season – netted a goal in the 23rd minute. The battle remained tense up until halftime.
Coming out of the dressing rooms, Quansah scored for Liverpool off of a free kick with just three minutes gone on the clock. That was exciting for Liverpool fans, as they appeared ready to take all three points after the energetic half-time speech from their captain and manager.
Liverpool still looked hungry to get another one on the scoreboard and win all three points to turn around a disappointing 2-3 week spell. But, Duran had two late goals in the 85th and 88th minutes to rescue a point for the Clarets.
Klopp noted the scoreline could have been even higher, and his side might have won if VAR and poor finishing hadn’t gotten in the way of the scoreline.
‘We got a bit of luck…Big Jhon is a bit nuts at times, he’s a nightmare to play against. People have written us off and we’ve floated under the radar.’
Both teams had almost 20 shots during the game, with Liverpool having seven on the frame and Aston Villa firing five between the goalposts. Liverpool earned 59% possession and strung together nearly 600 passes, while Villa’s 41% possession proved to be enough to rescue the draw.
Looking Forward for Liverpool
Now, Liverpool has just one more game left on Monday, May 20th against Wolverhampton Wanderers. There is no way for the Reds to increase their position on the ladder now, as City and Arsenal are too far ahead. However, they can end their season on a high note and send Jurgen Klopp off with a bit of fanfare if they win the game and earn three points.
