The Detroit Lions and New York Giants are in their final week of training camp before the 2024 season begins. Before the first preseason matchup between the two teams kicks off, the squads will hold two joint practices. The first practice has already taken place and will continue through Tuesday morning. During joint practice today, both teams got a little chippy and physical as punches ensued.
These scuffles on the practice field resulted in the Lions and Giants’ practice ending early. One fight included Amon Ra St. Brown and Giants rookie Cornerback Andru Phillips. This was the initial start that led to other altercations. What should be made of Monday’s events?

After a catch made by Detroit Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, the football was knocked out of his hands. In retaliation, St. Brown shoved Giants Safety Dane Belton Jr, which involved both benches clearing to protect teammates on both sides. The four-year veteran began chirping to the young defender as the joint practice began.
The second scuffle saw Giants starting Quarterback Daniel Jones in the middle of it all. As multiple players wrestled on the ground, New York Giants Center Greg Van Roten was at the bottom of the pile and could not get to a standing position. Van Roten pushed a Lions defensive lineman trying to get free from the pushing and shoving.
Daniel Jones jumped on top of the Detroit lineman while defending his center. Jones was soon pulled away by coaches and staff for precaution and protection as the quarterback should not be touched or contacted in practice. The third and final fight took place with each team’s offensive and defensive lines, but no punches were thrown before things came to an end for the day.
Detroit Lions 2024 Season
Preseason football will begin for the Detroit Lions on Thursday night against the Giants. Detroit is looking to keep its momentum after a historic campaign in 2023. The Lions had a 12-5 record last season, losing to the San Francisco 49ers by three points in the NFC Championship Game. They were very close to reaching Super Bowl LVII.
Head Coach Dan Campbell is entering his fourth season as the Detroit Lions headman. He has brought his former NFL team back to prominence as an NFC North contender and is now a force to be reckoned with. They won their division with leadership from veteran Quarterback Jared Goff and three-year Defensive End Aidan Hutchinson.
He was drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft as the second pick overall. It will be interesting to see how teams will stack up as their division rivals are bringing in top picks from this year’s draft class to compete for the same goal at the end of the upcoming season.
This Altercation May Impact Game
The two teams will have one more joint practice before going live on Thursday night in the first preseason game. As tempers have flared, it should give the players some time to cool down as they have to go head-to-head in practice again tomorrow. Physicality is the name of the game.
It shows the team that wants it more, and Dan Campbell is preaching to his players that to be successful, you have to outwork and dominate the opposing side. Fans will be watching to see if any other scuffles unfold as the 2024 NFL season kicks off in three more days.
