Detroit Lions Fans Don’t need to Panic

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions suffered a disappointing loss in week 2 against the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They don’t call it overreaction Monday for no reason but the fans of Detroit should not worry just quite yet. The Lions were a preseason favorite to not only win the NFC North but also be considered a Super Bowl contender. After Sunday, the Lions fell to 1-1 on the season and look to rebound in Week 3 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Lions Season So Far

The Detroit Lions started the 2024 season 1-1 after an overtime victory against the Los Angeles Rams. They followed that up with a disappointing loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both teams were victims of Detroit in the playoffs last season where the Lions sent both packing like a child’s sack lunch. Fans should have expected tough games in the first couple of weeks. Especially since the Lions are considered Super Bowl contenders they will be a target for opponents this season. Teams are expected to have the Lions circled on their schedules as a team they need to show up for.

Jared Goff has been subpar so far this season but it’s been two weeks, there is a lot of season left. With the lack of preseason play, Goff needs to shake off the rust. Jameson Williams has been a bright spot for Detroit’s offense. Williams continues to show off his speed like he’s going 0 to 60, and how fitting for the Motor City. Jamo has racked up over 200 total yards so far, living up to his training camp hype. David Montgomery is also running like he wants to hurt the defenders. Fans were skeptical when the Lions let Jamaal Williams hit free agency two years ago but Montgomery has proved to be an upgrade at the position.

The Lions’ third-year player, and former Michigan Wolverine, Aiden Hutchinson has led by example. Hutch has been on an absolute tear this season. Hutchinson had 4.5 sacks on Sunday with 3 in the first quarter. This is something that hadn’t been achieved by a Lions player since the 2000 season. He was also one sack away from tying a franchise record of 5.5 sacks in a game. Hutch has anchored a defense that is much improved from a season ago. The Lions’ defense has only let up 20 points in both of their games this season.

Why Lions Fans Shouldn’t Worry

The Lions fans should not panic after week 2. Detroit is the home of arguably the most aggressive coach in Dan Campbell. Campbell took full responsibility for the clock mismanagement at the end of the 1st half. The Lions weren’t able to get a play-off where it was an obvious spiking situation, yet the kicking team was rushing onto the field as well. This resulted in a penalty that cost Detroit a possible three points, which ended up being crucial. Campbell remains a coach that players play for. He put the blame on him earning respect from players and fans.

Ben Johnson is still an offensive genius. Johnson will most likely be one of the most sought-after coordinators for a head coaching position in the off-season. Look for Ben Johnson to draw up some new schemes for this weapon-filled offense. This should get Jared Goff even more comfortable and allow him to get into a rhythm earlier. Goff needs to play better, we all know this. We as Lions fans believe in Jared Goff. Goff had a horrendous game against the Bucs but it’s also one game. There is no need for calls for Hendon Hooker yet.

Baker Mayfield is also no slouch. Baker has proven his worth in Tampa and is a proven winner and competitor. Mayfield came to play picking up big plays through the air and with his mobility. At one point the broadcast compared him to Barry Sander, which was absolutely ridiculous, but you get the point.

Final Thoughts

Lions fans have to remind themselves that it’s only Week 2 of the season. The Lions played two preseason playoff-caliber teams. Last season the Lions also started 1-1 and made it to the NFC Championship. So before you call for anyone’s job *cough Jared Goff cough*, slow your role and shut your mouth. Give the Lions and Dan Campbell to find a rhythm, and get back on track. There’s a lot of season still to go!
